The venue where J played was tiny but picturesque. Before J two groups played: the Joe Laeman (italian guys) and the Fuck (american). There were few people. Not more than 70. Don’t know why. Maybe the driving rain over Rome. Maybe Italians don’t like or don’t understand good music. But all the people over there were real fans of J and Dinosaur Jr. You could realize it cause most of them knew all J’s songs and very often sang with him.
Before the gig I met J near the bathroom but I couldn’t tell him anything. He quickly walked into a room. A little later, during Fuck performance, he appeared in a room near the concert hall. I greeted him and asked to take a picture. He followed me in a place with more light and my girlfriend took the picture. He didn’t say anything to me, only nodded to my words. He was very polite but seemed to have an absent look. He looked sad and thoughtful. While he was waiting for starting the gig, he standed alone in a corner of the room.
Finally he started to play (it was late: about 0.30) and a magic fell among us. He played for about 1h and 20’.
      This is the setlist:
      1. Someone Said
      2. Thumb
      3. Freak Scene (I never heard it acoustic before: great)
      4. Quest
      5. What Else Is New
      6. Everybody Lets Me Down
      7. Flying Cloud
      8. Ammaring
      9. Keeblin
      10. Sameday
      11. Little Fury Things
      12. If That’s How Its Gotta Be
      13. Repulsion
      14. Get Me
      15. Not You Again
      16. Just Like Heaven
      17. Waistin
      18. Alone
      Encore:
      19. The Wagon

Unfortunately he didn’t play Severed Lips and Drawerings, two of my favourites. According to me the best songs were Get Me (long version), Ammaring and … all the others. Before start playing he went up on the bandstand and spent few minutes assembling his “famous pedalâ€

hey plissken, thank you very much for the show review & setlist :D
Even with only such a small audience it sounds like it was a wonderful gig 8)

Great that you had the chance to meet J & to take a pic with him – it would be great in the new photo album here on the site :P …and even better: you filmed the whole show :!: :o
wow, hopefully it turns out good :)

yes, J often makes the impression of being a bit absent… other members here had the same impression when they met him. Hopefully it’s not a depressive "absence".

great review plissken. I was there with you that night.
I come from Milano (600 km from Rome) to see for the first time an acoustic (?) show of J, and he was great: he gave to the little audience (70 is optimistic) everything they could want. He did the same thing in Milano the two other times I’ve the honor to see him (Milano, 2000 and 1994), and so I can say that I’m really thankful that he is my unique idol.

(sorry for the italian, but my english is so terrible …)
plissken: per il video, se tu riuscissi a farne una copia su una normale vhs e a inviarmela ti sarei davvero grato. Naturalmente mi accollerei anticipatamente ogni tua possiblie spesa. Fammi sapere, ciao grazie

                bye, chiodo33

Hi! I was there too! i’m Italian. It was my first J show (because I had problems to go to Milan in 2000), so it was OUTSTANDING!!! :D :D :D
The atmosphere was warm and private, people know many songs and sang with him (me too  ). First and after J was very kind. His solos are AMAZING, in Alone I could hear him for many hours!

Do u know anyone who records (with minidisc) the show?

                    hey chiodo33 & Tere,
thanks for your remarks & the additional perspectives :)
Even if there were not many people – it seems nonetheless, that J made a few of his Italian fans very happy :D

Can’t say anything bout the states, but the gig in Norway is sold out -which means that about 300 happy faces will be cheering for Joseph all night long.

I was surprised to see few people… I think 70 is optimistic for Rome. But I think it’s not because of poor J popolarity in Italy but for poor promotion: there weren’t announcements in every musical magazine! It’s unbeliavable! :x The site http://www.rockol.it (the most important in Italy for music) wrote about J’ show just 5 days before!!! And you can remember that the OFFICIAL date was 3 DIC at Classico not 2 DIC at Circolo degli Artisti: it seemed like bingo!!! :? I left suddenly: 4 hours of train and checks with my band cancelled……

The concert in Oslo will have a electric feel. A friend of mine who has not heard too much of J`s material will do a big favour for me. He will film with my dv camera. Thanks Rikard :D !!! Just hope he finds a good spot without covering everyones´view.
