Just noticed some wankfest is happening this weekend:
http://www.gladtree.com/fest2.html
Grab your tickets, go, stand and look bored (and be bored)
March 22, 2007 at 3:28 pm #126593Whooooo boy……..that does look pretty terrible. I’m happy to see Mystery Train is still open, though. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been up Amherst way and I sometimes wonder how many of the old book and record shops are still hanging on. I’ve heard Dynamite in Northampton is either gone, or in the process of going, which is a bummer. I bought a lot of jazz and reggae there over the years.

edit: it was ‘for the record’

Their prices on some things were fantastic. Newbury Comics must’ve been the final nail in the coffin for them. That place was a real institution, reaching back to the ’70s, I think. That’s really too bad. Is that cheap pasta place near Newbury Comics still open?

I know its been there a while (at least since ’00.. I think) but only recently went there. It’s 3 or so floors… but I think that is recent (might have only been 1 floor before).
Also, another institution in Amherst is the Mercantile. I dont think they do quite as well as they once did- although the Northampton location seems fine. I heard that Umass amherst banned any candles on campus- which is a majoy business for that store. reason: too many umass students lit candles next to posters/decorative cloths. so they banned the candles, not the moron students. gee, one would think that after lighting a candle, one should not go to bed/get shitfaced drunk and leave your room.
The biggest institution in the area, restaurant-wise, that I can think of, is Fitzwilly’s in Northampton. I’m not sure how long they have been there… but I don’t see any problems there. I love that place. I think that the biggest issue driving these places out of business though is rising property taxes.
The *best* burger joint I’ve ever been to was in Amherst called Fatzos (also the best, and aptly named). Unfortunately they inexplicably closed at the end of 2006 (the cost of having a business in Amherst became to expensive, and they were forced to close- even though they were a very popular place). You could get a burger in multiple sizes- quarter pound, half pound, 3/4 pound and the Fatzo’s pound. Such variety too. Amazing fries. And they f&*cking closed!

Pasta Y Basta is what I’m thinking of, though originally it was only one floor, so it must’ve moved/expanded sometime after 2002 (the last time I was there). I don’t remember Fatzos, but I lived in Noho for my three years in that area and tended to eat mostly in town (La Veracruzana; the Thai joint that relocated from central downtown to the north side of the train bridge; the couple of Indian places; Ichiban (which was a stone’s throw away from my apartment); East Side Grill; and Packard’s, which I hope is still there. Great burgers. I used to go to the Boltwood Tavern in Amherst pretty often, though, and an old drunk prof and I once got cut off and kicked out of there after downing an obscene amount of scotch. That led to a projectile vomiting episode once I somehow made it home, and a two-day hangover. I also loved that diner out by Look Park that baked their own bread and whipped up the best homemade corned beef hash I’ve ever tasted. And there’s Pekarski’s smokehouse up in the hills near Conway, which sold the best kielbasa and smoked pork chops ever. And Bub’s BBQ, which I’ve heard is still there. After having lived in the terminal hell that is central NJ for the past six years, I look back on my time in the Noho/Amherst area with great fondness.

That’s a great place. Lobster lovers told me their lobsters were great. Flo’s is still there- BUT.. they converted the back room into a bar. The bar is nice… but… no lobsta’s now.
Oh, and Packard’s is most defintely there.
Pasta Y Pasta has been expanded, you’re right.
Another casuality in Noho is Fire & Water. That places closed down a few years back- but the owner opened up a new place in Florence called "Evolution".
March 26, 2007 at 9:20 am #126601Wow, I’m surprised the Bent Moustache showed. So what’d J do, play a Fall cover with them? Wish I’d seen that actually. BTW, was anybody from Sebadoh there? Hope you didn’t have to sit thru too much crud to see the goodstuff.

Bent Moustache were a last minute addition I think- they were actually penned in on the schedule by the entrance, sometime after the show began. The whole thing was pretty laid back- it seemed most everyone there knew each other pretty well. I enjoyed the experience, and it fit my mood pretty well.
March 27, 2007 at 9:21 am #126603I can imagine it being enjoyable, despite my original comment about the small festival. I have mixed feelings regarding experimental shows and whatnot. I do wish I lived a bit closer to the Hampshire hills region, perhaps I’d feel more in touch with what goes on around there. Anyway, I’m definitely psyched to see the original Sebadoh line-up again since my only time seeing it back in April of 93.

It was experimental for sure. Long songs, experimental noise, weirdness. There was some rocking parts to it, but it was pretty laid back.
