now, you guys may think i dont have any room to talk cuz im not really a hendrix fan, but think about it….

J is probably one of the top 5 best guitarists in the world, and ahead of Jimi in my opinion.

think about it, for one, J’s older than hendrix lived to be so hes had more practice and experience, and also, J had more of an opportunity to be influenced by other heavy guitar bands, figuring hendrix was around in the 60s.

      lol

though im probably gonna get flamed for this, does anyone agree?

there are so many factors deciding what the "best" guitarist is.
deciding who is best often comes down to personal taste.
one could of course test technical level, chord knowlegde/usage, speed etc. but that wouldn’t be very exciting.

J has inspired a lot of bands, so he is definetly an important one.
Hendrix was important as we all know. I can’t understand how anyone can manage to write Little wing. there are so much stuff going on in his playing.

by the way, this topic should be moved to the Guitar thread.

          lol lol
you need a public spanking for that…
Hendrix is way, way better than J and beyond ! Hendrix is the shit in the guitar world and for a undetermined time.
Technical metal heads, Indie boys and everyone agree on that ……..
J is good and has kind of the same approach than Hendrix on guitar , lot of emotion and free solo.. he gave chills
but hes too on pentatonic scale and same gimmicks and sometime do too much, demonstration and long pentatonic solos
Hendrix is so much more than that..
          sorry

They’re 2 different kinds of people which you can’t compare. If they were at around the same age and played the same music, then you could, otherwise its plain stupid.

To me what make Hendrix so great and widely considered the best ever is his influence on music after him. No one played the guitar as loud as Hendrix or relied so much on pedals and feedback until he came along. I’d say if it weren’t for Hendrix, we either wouldn’t know J Mascis or his guitar playing would be wildly different.

I remember a metalhead in school insisted that Hendrix was`nt that great. He said he just brought in the heavier guitar sounds but Randy Rhoads was better ::) There`s alot of guitarists out there that could get the crown for the greatest or the best but it`s like who is the best author or poet or movie producer or whatever.Hendrix said once he wanted to sound like jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, who is not that known to people besides jazz freaks or guitar freaks.J is a great player and one of my faves for sure but I don`t think of him as better as Hendrix.

I love J, but nobody is better then Hendrix! Yeah, plenty of guys have better "technique", but "technique" guys seem to be a dime a dozen. Give me a feel player like a Jimi or a J any day of the week.

Didn’t Jimi say Phil Keagy was the best?

i know this kid that claims he is better than Hendrix and jimmy page because they don’t do sweep picking—all he does is sit there with his seven string music man and sweep picks solos—it is really annoying :o :o :o :o :o :o ::) ::) ::) :P ::) o

I do like some technique players. Randy Rhoads and Marty Friedman from Megadeth are two guitarist I really like.

I read a guitar magazine about 2 years ago, that interviewed/questioned guitarist from many different genres of music. It was amazing to see how many guitarist mentioned Jimi, and Machine Gun.

You can say "I like J better than Hendrix" and no one could argue.

Yeah opinions — ;) but it doesn’t matter both of them are really good at what they do and influence lots of people including myself personally.

From a certain point of view, the best guitarists in the world are probably not rock guitarists at all… if it’s pure technical skills you’re after, jazz guitarists are, on average, a lot better.

J is a wonderful guitarist, one of my very favorites, and I actually listen to him more than Hendrix. However, I wouldn’t ever say that he was better than Hendrix, for a few reasons. One is that, as pointed out above, there probably wouldn’t even be a J Mascis if there had never been a Jimi Hendrix. But, more importantly, Hendrix just had amazingly variety of music in his playing–blues, jazz, soul, funk, folk, Indian music, to name a few, and J Mascis doesn’t even come close in that respect.

                              I totally agree with that
The fact is that Jimy Hendrix was more open minded and was always up to experiment new things.
I’d love to hear some more experimentation from J. It would be great to hear some new stuff from him. I remenber the song of Dinosaur with the hip hop band on the compil ‘just another victim’ It was one of the best song with the one by Helmet and House Of Pain.
