August 23, 2005 at 1:29 pm #110980Has anyone ordered their "J. Mascis and Friends sing and Chant for Amma" cd from Surefire Distribution http://www.surefiredistribution.com/cgi-bin/showdescription.pl?catno=BG7? If so how long did it take to come in. I’ve ordered mine and haven’t recieved it yet…but maybe I’m just impatient.
August 23, 2005 at 11:21 pm #110981Yeah, I ordered my copy of "J and Friends Sing and Chant For AMMA" CD from Surefire Distribution, through their website (using Paypayl). I received it yesterday. It took about 10 days before it arrived, but I live in Sweden, so I guess it depends on where you are, but if you’ve ordered it, and made an advanced payment through Paypayl, I’m sure it’ll arrive soon.
I love it. I listened to it yesterday while riding my bike. It’s really really good. This is actually like getting a new, real studio album from J, because it’s, well, written and performed by him, and they’re all new, previously unheard/unreleased songs. Very different, yet very J. The album is 44 minutes long.
Too bad it didn’t get a "proper" release. Also, I wonder what year these songs were recorded. I remember reading something about the song "Help Me Amma" in an interview years ago. I think it was around the time of the release of Free So Free when J mentioned this song called "Help Me Amma" that he had written for Amma, and that it was "pretty direct", as he put it.
August 26, 2005 at 12:58 pm #110982I ordered it from Surefire a while ago and then got an email earlier this week explaining that demand has been way more that they expected and they’ve run out of stock. It says more are on the way and it will ship ASAP.
Looking forward to it.

September 18, 2005 at 8:34 pm #110984It’s funny. I had never heard of Amma till I saw her mentioned in this very thread this summer. I actually was going to go see her local Massachusetts appearance because I was really intrigued at this woman who hugs so many people to heal them (I never did make it to see her).
Anyhow, I joined a meditation group locally about a month ago. Last week when we are done with our meditation (an hour straight) I look at a corner of the room and see all these Amma pictures. I was like, "Hey, I know who that is from the Dinosaur Jr. forum." The older women who were participation just kind of looked at me. I don’t think they knew who Dinosaur Jr. was.

I wonder if J. does transmission meditation? It’s pretty cool. It can get pretty intense. Your head throbs with the energy.

Review by Jason Ankeny
A collection of devotional songs dedicated to Amma, the living Indian saint Sri Mata Arritanandarrayi Devi, this self-released disc represents the most beautiful and nakedly emotional music J Mascis has ever created–though favoring acoustic guitars and simple, circular melodies, it’s as powerful as anything ever wrought by Dinosaur Jr, with the crucial difference that it soothes the soul instead of warping the brain. While Mascis’ quavering voice always articulated the emotional turmoil his splatterpunk lyrics once conspicuously avoided, here he confronts his spiritual conflicts with poignant honesty, contemplating confusion, isolation and loss in unflinching detail–when he finally plugs in his guitar for the closing "Heavy Metal Ai Girl Nandini," a blistering reintepretation of a Sanskrit hymn some 1300 years old, the catharsis is monumental.
