eh…my step dad GAVE me his as a going away present when I moved to Nashville. I like to call it my "Go Away Present." I’ve seen a few on Ebay and one around here, they list $1,200 and go for around $700. Find one in decent shape and work on it or something…..it’s really easy. Also, look around on Ebay for "project guitars" "project Gibson" etc. You can find insane deals on great guitars. Sometimes all they need is love and a little glue. Although I almost bought a Gibson from the 50’s that was demolished, but it got up too high and I didn’t even bid on it. It was easily in like 150 pieces and it had a case too, but it got to like $150 and I felt that was a bit pricey….maybe not…..but, a TON of work and I could have a 50’s Gibson for $150…..but I didn’t want to do it.
Look around man, great deals are everywhere.

September 20, 2006 at 12:01 pm #115502here we go…..the new Mustangs, they’re CRAP! DOes anyone have one? Is yours crap? Do you also have/have played an old one? The newer ones seem thinner and to be made out of balsa. The guitar just looks fake. Mine is American from the 70’s and looks great. I dont know where these are made, but it’s proof that Fender just wants money.
November 7, 2006 at 3:34 pm #115503I just emailed Fender to inquire about J’s signature guitar, and this is the response I got,
"Hello Tony, Thank you for your interest in Fender Musical Instruments.
At this time, I do not have any information concerning a J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster."Best Regards,
Chris Matyniak
So bummed……. If anyone else wants to bug em’ be my guest.
If anyone is curious this is what I wrote,
"Hello, I am writing to request any information available in regards to a J Mascis Signature Series Jazzmaster. He is the lead guitarist for Dinosaur Jr, a very influential indie band form the 80’s and 90’s. He has said in interviews that he had recently gotten a prototype Jazzmaster from Fender that might go to production. Its purple sparkle (with matching headstock), and has a gold pick guard, with a tune-o-matic bridge. I would love to own this guitar, and am curious on any developments. Thank you for your time."

kinda a combo of js stolen 59 and sig jazzmastersNovember 11, 2006 at 5:41 pm #115511Just a thought, old guitars (some old guitars) came with a brass plate attached to the back of the headstock to add sustain. I’ve never played a guitar with this plate so I don’t know if it actually worked or not, but I would imagine that if you could get a pickguard made of brass, that would look cool and serve a purpose. I have made a guitar where I cut a groove into the body and put a brass strip in it, it’s finished over, so you cant see it but it’s just an experiment to see what happens. Of course a brass pickguard may set you back a little but if it would work then I think it would be worth it. No one would know why your guitar sounds so good and has so much sustain. ……anyone got some brass? lol I wanna try that now.
Honestly though dude…..if you dont make that guitar, I’m going to hunt you down and kick you in the shin. If that doesnt work, I’ll bite your arm. If THAT doesnt work, I’ll come back with a shovel.

The reason the brass plate on the headstock works is that the headstock lacks mass in comparison to the body. I assume increasing mass anywhere on the guitar will help sustain some, but the body already has substantial mass… the idea is to even-out the two ends.
November 27, 2006 at 9:20 pm #115514I called Fender today and the guy I spoke to was aware of the rumor of a signature Jazzmaster, but said there are no immediate plans. If it was going to happen, it wouldn’t be until 2008.
