Anyone know why J Mascis is the first person thanked on the new sonic youth album "Rather Ripped"?

      I was just wondering. Thanks.

maybe they recorded it at his house or he helped them out a lot.

or perhaps it’s because they have been friends for 20+ years. SY has their own studio so I doubt they did anything at J’s.

Or maybe he babysits Coco. :P

I think I did read that in fact SY tracked some vocals for Rather Ripped at J’s home studio. I imagine you can turn up whatever I read with a Google search.

              Thanks all.

I pulled this info up i think this kind of answers my question:

Mr. Jim O’Rourke decided to concentrate full-time on his Japanese studies of language and film and SY was subsequently back to it’s OG nucleus of Kim-Thurston-Lee-Steve. Songs were written, Jim recommended engineer TJ Doherty and J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) recommended mix engineer John Agnello and SY created the oddly titled "Rather Ripped". The whole deal was recorded in the waning hours of 05 into the dawn sunshine of 06 at the venerable Sear Sound studios in NYC’s fading theatre district. Partially mixed there and at Hoboken, NJ’s Water Music by the golden juice ear of John Agnello it exhibits SY in positive vibration mode.

I too heard that SY recorded some stuff for Rather Ripped at J’s home studio. Plus he’s been good friends with the band for many years. Before Dinosaur Jr even got signed to SST. So why not thank him?

Apparently, all the songs are about J. I gathered this by reading the lyrics. It’s teenage riot to the 99th degree.

I read the lyrics and didn’t really see how some could be about J.

Sadly, I was not overjoyed about this album.. A lot of people didn’t care for Murray Street or Sonic Nurse, but I really love both of those albums. I guess I need to go give Rather Ripped another listen. It just sounds a little dull to me..
