Anyone know why J Mascis is the first person thanked on the new sonic youth album "Rather Ripped"?
I was just wondering. Thanks.
June 14, 2006 at 9:43 am #118308maybe they recorded it at his house or he helped them out a lot.
June 14, 2006 at 12:42 pm #118309or perhaps it’s because they have been friends for 20+ years. SY has their own studio so I doubt they did anything at J’s.
Or maybe he babysits Coco.
June 14, 2006 at 12:46 pm #118310I think I did read that in fact SY tracked some vocals for Rather Ripped at J’s home studio. I imagine you can turn up whatever I read with a Google search.
June 14, 2006 at 1:26 pm #118311Thanks all.
I pulled this info up i think this kind of answers my question:
Mr. Jim O’Rourke decided to concentrate full-time on his Japanese studies of language and film and SY was subsequently back to it’s OG nucleus of Kim-Thurston-Lee-Steve. Songs were written, Jim recommended engineer TJ Doherty and J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) recommended mix engineer John Agnello and SY created the oddly titled "Rather Ripped". The whole deal was recorded in the waning hours of 05 into the dawn sunshine of 06 at the venerable Sear Sound studios in NYC’s fading theatre district. Partially mixed there and at Hoboken, NJ’s Water Music by the golden juice ear of John Agnello it exhibits SY in positive vibration mode.
June 24, 2006 at 9:59 pm #118312I too heard that SY recorded some stuff for Rather Ripped at J’s home studio. Plus he’s been good friends with the band for many years. Before Dinosaur Jr even got signed to SST. So why not thank him?

I read the lyrics and didn’t really see how some could be about J.

August 13, 2006 at 4:53 am #118319Anyone like the new SY album by the way?
I for one am getting pretty fond of some of the tunes, couldn’t get Incinerate out of my head for a few days.August 13, 2006 at 10:43 am #118320sonic youth never fail to amaze me
August 15, 2006 at 9:15 am #118321Sadly, I was not overjoyed about this album.. A lot of people didn’t care for Murray Street or Sonic Nurse, but I really love both of those albums. I guess I need to go give Rather Ripped another listen. It just sounds a little dull to me..
