Saw J last night in Charlottesville. A cool venue that only holds 300 people and only 100 or so showed up. Ben Lee was good up front, lots of energy and passion about his tunes. The came J. & Company. It was a great, a solid show from beginning to end. I stood 4 feet from J. and 8 feet from his Marshall stack. Lots of good pictures
J. played some very nice, tasteful solos, not too many examples of his ability to shred (maggotbrain would have been nice
) but it was great to be so close and I happily soaked up every note. My recording equipment did the same for anyone who wants to trade
It was an awesome night. Wish the guys would play around here a lot more often

…MaggotbrainFebruary 14, 2003 at 3:20 pm #91458hey maggotbrain, thanks a lot for the review

would be fantastic to see some of the pics you made – to say nothing of the recording
hope it all turned out fine!Isn’t it a shame that there was only such a small crowd!? heard something about bad weather conditions over there, maybe one of the reasons
February 14, 2003 at 3:34 pm #91459Where do I send the pics and the recording?
February 14, 2003 at 3:42 pm #91460im sorry im the Wrong person to ask about the recording – but the pictures can go in the member gallery. Glad you had a great time
February 14, 2003 at 3:49 pm #91461for pics, there’s a fine place here on the site: They can be uploaded into the ‘live pics’ section of the FreakScene photo album

for recordings, it’s best to get in contact with anthony on the freesofree.net message board. He’ll explain the steps to upload stuff on the freesofree.net FTP server

Or you can check out the other FreakScene FTP servers here: Current FTP Info
we’re always glad to see & hear new stuff
February 14, 2003 at 7:13 pm #91462Cool. I uploaded four pics to the member gallery. I’ll convert some of the WAV files to mp3 and see if I can get them onto a server sometime next week. Thanks for the tip and enjoy

February 19, 2003 at 11:36 pm #91468Hey Maggotbrain!! wasn’t that a terrific show? i was there and am a long long time J/Dino fan. have seen J a buncha times over the years from huge events to intimate acoustic settings. it was too bad the turnout was kinda weak at starr hill though. kinda like when Mike Watt played there last year. these guys are legends.
Opening with "the Lung" just set the night in motion for me. probably my all time favf dino song. I am terrible with song names because i never read record/CD covers. but I really dug the new stuff he played as well. of course "Out There", "The Wagon", "Freak Scene" were fantastic. But the song of the night for me was "Sludgefeast" oh man was that great.
i stood back for part of the show, and came right up front for a few songs. I had plugs in as he was freakin’ loud!!! I think many folks who didn;t really know J were shocked how loud he likes to play. and likely didn;t hear right for at least a week. I hope you had some plugs in. or am i just a p*ssy?
did you feel the air being pushed outta that rig of his?? the whole band was great too, although i was hoping Watt would be on the Thudstaff. It was great seeing J after the show and just shaking his hand and saying "thanks from a long time fan".Now if C’ville could just keep getting some decent Rock acts. John Spencer will be cool.
February 20, 2003 at 8:55 am #91469February 20, 2003 at 12:59 pm #91470hey halouis, thanks a lot for your view of the show & welcome here

yeah, and on the link which anthony posted, the Charlottesville show is up to be downloaded (after a small registration procedure) if you haven’t yet: just check it out! …there are a lot of Dino/ J shows, too

… and you’re not alone with considering the J & the Fog shows as ‘loud’, we just discussed it here
February 20, 2003 at 4:26 pm #91471hey thanks guys. i checked that out, and so far got the Wagon DLed. trying to figure out the rest now.
our town C’ville doesn;t usually get too many great rock acts. mostly neohippy jam band stuff ala dave matthews and lots quasi bluegrass. well that just aint my bag, so when legends like J show up or mike Watt, or upcoming John Spencer, i’m all over it. have to run to Richmond for more rock too.
yeah he’s always been loud as long as i have been a fan. i remember my old buddy from high school had an older brother who was in college back in the mid-late 80’s. up in CT i think. DIno was playing his college cafeteria, and warmed up just banging out Led Zep songs. He said ikt was unbelievable and way way loud. THats the way i like it. But these days (being 33) i gotta wear the plugs. still sounded great with them in.
