I arrived after the first song to see J and Cobra Verde. They didn’t play to long. The singer was annoying me and he was smoking, which is now against the law and that irritated me because I wanted a cigarette. J had a blue flower strat. Very weird for two reasons. I have a flower tele and have never seen anyone else with a blue flower fender. (I think the teles are cooler) I have never seen J play a strat and use the strat type whammy. He basically used his accoustic pedals and he had a fulltone choralflange which I didn’t understand because we all gave him a tzf which is a much cooler flange and I don’t know if he has used it yet. I don’t remember hearing any flanging though. I do wish he had a wah. He really raised CV’s music to another level. The couple songs where he really jammed out were awesome. He looked kind of out of place in the corner with the hipster rockers. I much prefer him singing but it was cool to just see him play guitar it puts too much focus on his guitar playing and made him seem like slash or something. At one point a blast seemed to go all through his back and out his mouth with a little grin thrown in. He looked like he was having a good time so thats what’s important right?
May 27, 2003 at 11:08 am #93818Thanks for the review, it does sound like J’s having a great time. The CV album has some great songs, Riot Industry, Throw It Away & Til Sunrise are my favs, the guitar J adds to Throw It Away…
 Must be strange not seeing him sing though, I was hoping he’d add some backups or something. At the record release show in Cleveland someone mentioned they did A Stooges song with J on drums, guess that didn’t happen last nite…fingers crossed it does in the middle of the country

I was hoping he’d use his new guitar along with the new pedal, but it’s early days in the tour so they may come in @ some point along the way
Hearing J describe the responsibilites involved with being the one organizing & paying for a full band tour this must seem like a cake walk. Get out there play guitar, all the fun with minimal responsibility. Hopefully just what he needs to take his mind off all the crap he’s had to deal with, getting sick/surgery, his concerns with the whole loss of freedom thing, then the fire…

Full smoking ban starts June 1st here, not a smoker myself but it must be hard
May 27, 2003 at 11:21 am #93819That is one ugly guitar and like I said I have a flower tele but the flower strat is too much, and a choral flange. I guess J is spending some of his insurance cash but the stuff he is buying, well it is his stuff, I just always admired his gear acquisitions until recently.
May 27, 2003 at 7:54 pm #93820I have a blue flower tele too!
mine is the first reissue from 86
May 28, 2003 at 5:03 am #93821hey ammaringnyc, thanks for the review

this is about the 10th time you’ve seen with J within the last months
…looks like you live in a good spot to see him on stage often
great to know that he seems to have fun on the CV gigs
personally, I couldn’t tell which guitar or gear is cool or not (and for me as a non-musician, it wouldn’t be the main thing I’d contemplate about on a gig with J
)May 29, 2003 at 2:31 pm #93822that might not be j’s personal guitar, it’s possible he borrowed it off john for the tour. i seem to recall cobra verde using a flowered strat on a past tour at some point although i’m not 100% certain.
June 20, 2003 at 10:38 am #93823it doesn’t really matter what j’s guitar looks like, what matters is what comes out of it. a blue flower strat sounds pretty cool to me.
