Hey, Anybody here own a Jazzmaster? I have a few guitars I was thinking of selling my strat (jap) and tele (Jap) to put towards an american Jazzmaster because it’s my dream guitar. I’ve never played one though and I feel I need to know a bit more about how they play and sound before I commit to one. I play dinosaur jr, hendrix and just grunge and I was hoping I could get some advice from fellow dino fans who play a jazzmaster. Any help will be greatly appriciated :), cheers Sam

i gotta coupla RI Jazzmasters that i bash around.
i dont think i could say anything about them that you couldnt find out from findin one and plugging it in…
like Mick said in that tune "its the singer, not the song"
so its the player not the instrument.

I have one, a Jap one. But I couldnt really tell you much about it because I haven’t had much experience playing other guitars apart from a shit one I used to start off with. Also my amp sucks. It’s probably best you just go to a store and have a play of one if you can find one.

Actually one thing I can think of saying is that I love used the tremolo on this guitar as opposed to one on a strat.

thanks for replies, I know it would be best for me to play one but I’ve been searching for about 8 months now but they never get them in guitar shops :( around here, so I’m just waitin for a nice one to show up on ebay. I just basically wanted to know what you like about them…

Thats cool because I don’t really think the tremolo on the strat is that great, cheers

"is that I love used the tremolo"

Oh no, my poor grammar quoted for eternity. :P
But I’m sure you could tell from watching Mascis that they are fun to use anyway :P
Plus they have a tremolo lock which is sort of a nice feature about it, so you can have it work or not work by the flick of a switch.
However I mine isnt adjusted right so if I lock it I have to change the tuning down, I really should fix that.

Also, I like the electrics in them, once again, I’m not the not the best person to talk about it. But I think the way it works has a good variation in the sounds from the different pickups and settings. I could probably explain this better but I won’t, you can have it in on one setting which has alot more bass or there is a setting which I think takes away all the bass (I think from photos and videos Mascis has his guitar this way, but who knows, he probably changes it depending).

              Check out this,
              http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/v2/index.php?page=goodies_geek&show=interactive_jag”>http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/v2/index … active_jag

It’s based on a Jaguar, but its somewhat similiar, fiddle with the things, and you’ll see it says a switch subtracts the bass frequencies from the sound and such and such.

I have one of the USA ’62 RI’s and it’s a very nice guitar, but my Tele sees more use. Jazzmaster are different from a lot of other guitars. They have a longer scale neck and the stock bridge is a pain in the butt, but that’s addressable. I wouldn’t trade your guitars to buy one blindly though. Try one first, even if you have to do some searching…

Can I hear what you two both think what is wrong with the stock bridge? because I might actually agree with you.

                      i like my stock bridges!
i read alot on the web where it says to change out the bridge-my friend has a Japanese Jazzmaster and he had a tech just put a groove or notch per string right into the bridge-i guess for stability-but i’ve never had a problem.

sorry to correct, but the jazzy is a 25.5" scale, same as strat, the jag is 24, same as the mustang(excluding the custom scale 22.6) the jazzmaster mia is the best guitar fender makes out side of the custom shop. its not worth the 1700 that they sell new for but if you could catch a deal of 1400, than its worth every bit. if you play super hard, than get a stang bridge or a buzz stop(which disables the tremelo) personally the jazzmasters more trouble than worth if you want it for image, but if you want it for its sound, and its fantastic playabilty, than its worth its up keep. soon (around this fall) ill be buying an mia jazzy myself, and its goinmg to be my trat of an early holiday. its my favorite guitar, also if your going to be spending that much money, get a colour you like, which is the only thing keeping me back from it. have fun playing man!
