The length doesn’t matter, it’s the threading on the end of the whammy that makes a difference. I’m not sure if it would work or not; but if the threading is different and you jam it in too hard it might fuck up your bridge.
February 27, 2006 at 11:23 pm #114691the vibrato bars on Strats and Jazzmasters are totally incompatible.
its not just the threading-the lengths-6 1/2" for my Strats and 8" on my J.masters @ the bend and are not interchangeable.fwiw

February 28, 2006 at 3:32 pm #114692nope the strat whammy bars are threaded but the jazz/jag/ mustangs are not they rather just pop in there or rather fall in some cases i guess lol
February 28, 2006 at 9:55 pm #114693I rang this music store not too long ago to see if they had any whammy bars for my Jazzmaster (which I bought there) and they go oh yeah we do have one, so I went all the way in there and this the guy is like one problem, and I go yeah… and he says well it doesnt seem to have any threading so you’re gonna have to go to some place to get a thread cut into it, and I was thought ..f$%k. I bought it anyway knowing I was never going to find a place to get a thread cut into it, and then later I was overjoyed when I found out you just jam them in to the guitar, also good because I got it heaps cheap cause the guy didn’t know.
March 3, 2006 at 10:56 pm #114694ahahah, yeah guitar shops are great to get stuff for jazzmasters and jaguars. they useally dont know anything about them. and the person witht he pre cbs shorline gold jazzmaster. must i say, you ahve my dream guitar! are the tuneing pegs also shorline gold, since im pretty sure in 61 it was a cs colour only…..any beatuiful jazzmaster man!

the japs are metic and the amers. have a dit of a dip in them at the endsMarch 6, 2006 at 5:17 pm #114696Sorry, why do I have to be careful?
March 8, 2006 at 10:40 am #114697I have a 1966 Jazzmaster. Got it last year for about £900 – which was by all accounts not a bad price. It’s been refined somewhere along the line and looks like the black and white one (with the pearl inlays) posted by zhviago. Nice guitars man!
My headstock is not black though. 1966 was the year I think they changed to those pearl inlays. Love to know what my guitars colour was originally… dude in the shop couldn’t tell.
I’ve just got hold of a tortoise shell scratchguard as I may refin it again to sunburst.
Re: the bridge… the dude who sold it to me advised me to string up with 11s or 13s – nothing lower. Thicker strings and all that… but still they slip about. Could be that the bridge is just knackered!
It’s a bit of a pain but I’m such a bad guitarist I’m not gonna be ‘playing out’ as it were. This is to just noodle around with at home and maybe do some recording with….if I ever finish writing a song!Totally got the guitar because of J… and a little bit of Kevin Shields/Nels Cline. Decided after the Forum re-union shows last year that I had to have one. I’ve coveted having one for 15 + years! Saved up for 4/5 months….They are kinda tough to play, or at least I find them that way, but I have tiny wee hands:) Sort of makes me play better (I kid myself). Pop it thru a wee Fender Blues Junior and stomp on 2 x Big Muffs, a lovely old orange and blue Univox Superfuzz, a Smallstone, a Smallclone, an Electric Mistress and a wah.

I’d love a ’61 slab board one….maybe later this year I’ll save up loads and get one
April 6, 2006 at 1:31 pm #114700Over the last 15 years I’ve owned five 60s Jazzmasters (my current slab board ’62, a ’64, a couple of early 65s with clay dots and a ’67) and two Jags (a ’63 and a 90s MIJ reissue) and they are fantastic guitars, but the Japanese ones need some upgrading before they’re really playable (electronics, jack, pickups, trem spring). As with any guitar, proper setup is crucial. These guitars were designed when 12s were considered "light" strings, so if you are playing 9s or even 10s, they aren’t going to work the way they are supposed to. I’d recommend 11s at the very least. With heavier strings and a proper setup the bridges aren’t a problem. As far as the tone goes, they can go from surfy twang to Dinosaur/Swervedriver growl and all points in between.
April 6, 2006 at 3:01 pm #114701I just bought a 62 USA Reissue off ebay a few weeks ago. Its funny because I also have an early 90’s MIJ Jaguar. The Jap bridge has suited me fine, of coarse I had to tweek the little screws to get them to stay put, but its been great. I’ve played many shows with that guitar. The USA Jazzmaster I just got has the same bridge, but the way it was set up was horrible. I ended up just throwing that bridge away and buying a Warmoth modified Mustang Bridge. Much better bridge and it solved all the problems of the old one. I changed the pickgaurd to a white pearloid one. I’m waiting for my white knobs and pick up covers as we speak (read). It’ll be super sweet when its all together. Its Sherwood Green, and has upgraded Seymor Duncan Vintage Jazzmaster pickups.

April 19, 2006 at 4:36 pm #114703you didnt need to change bridges, just saddles, or you could cheat and cut deeper grooves in the better looking(imo) jaguar jazzmaster saddles. the jaguar and mustang bridges, are the same, the saddles are whats diffrent. also if your not useing atleast 10’s that won’t do any help to anything…
April 19, 2006 at 7:12 pm #114704I replaced the bridge with a mustang too…..I wonder why fender keeps using those bridges, when everybody complains about them.
Btw:What string gauges does J use?.With all the soloing going on he can´t have gone all Sonic Youth on the string gauges.
