J mascis uses 0.10, it says in guitarmagazines. It is recomended to use 0.11 or higher, because the orginal brigde is a little "slippery". Looks like j mascis has put on tuneomatic brigdes on his jazzmasters.

if he uses a tom, it must be a rolling tom with all the tremelo work he does.

          Nope.
I’m petty sure that J’s tune-o-matics are not the roller type. In fact the bridge on J’s original ’64/ ’65 Jazzmaster wasn’t an actual Gibson style tune-o-matic. It was a little different. There’s not a huge difference in sound between a Jazzmaster with a stock bridge and a Jazzmaster with a t.o.m. in my opinion, but maybe I’m cloth eared. J obviously likes ’em. I’ve got a ’59 Jazzmaster with a stock bridge that’s back home with my folks, sadly, and needs work, (I really must sort it out) but when it was up and running okay, it definitely had that Dino sound, especially that first album semi-distorted jangle tone.

normal gibbo t.o.ms arent much on tremelo use……im just saying, gretsch’s use t.o.ms aswell, but they’re rollers. and if that 59 jazzy is all stock keep it that way, if its already re finished and looks bad id do a re-fin, but if its all orignal keep it that way. it will only go up in value.

My ’59 has a mediocre old refin that’s partly stripped plus I managed to bust the the tort pickguard where the jack socket is (this is pretty common and I recently picked up an ’60s replacement). I also managed to crack the original bone nut ( how? WTF?) so it’s a "players guitar" as they say. Sounds amazing though. The price of refins seems to keep rising also but I resolve to get the repairs done sometime this year hopefully and never let it go.

Er, i wasn’t exactly teling you to sell it bys aying it will only raise in value, i ment that because, there is x amount of 59 jazzmasters, and those disappear everyday because of gibbo fans and their stupdi 56 lp gold top switchs….anyways howd a bone nut get busted? thats not exactly what i would call common, but its say 50 years old(the bone…) yeah some people take mustang/jaguar metal controll plate tips(where the jack goes) and routes the pickguard for them, it works wonders, but not exactly what i call cute… anyways i bet your guitar looks stunning(as any stock pickup jazzmaster does(as in no buckers)) anyways post pictures if you already haven’t i wanna see it!

                  Hey Jebus,
No, of course I didn’t for a second take it that you meant I should sell my Jazzmaster, I was just emphasising the fact that I’m particularly attached to it (it was my first "proper" guitar) and that I love Jazzmasters. They’re surely the most beautiful solid electric guitars ever made. My girlfriend came up with a nice way to described the jazzmaster . something like , "masculine but elegant" :D. I dunno. They look just as good if not better when "girls" play them – Check out the wicked Shannon Wright. Plus they’re way more versatile and usable than most people seem to give ’em credit for.I’d Post pics of it but I don’t have any handy or own a digital camera. To make matters worse it’s in England and I live in Cyprus right now! Sweet Jebus, I miss this guitar! :) I’m gonna have to go there and arrange the fix up job because I wouldn’t trust anyone here to do it. No offense to any Cypriots intended but ,y’know, Cyprus is deep in bouzouki (Ugh!) country, it’s not really a guitar oriented culture. How did I bust the nut? One fine day, a hamfist and a bonehead was trying to fiddle with a worn, plinky sounding nut slot when, ooops! Oh fuck! I’d trust a Cypriot guitar tech ( if there is such a thing) over my handywork, of course. But I won’t.
Jebus, I’ve rambled a bit here haven’t I? Oh and by the way, Jagstangs are pretty cool too in a way, so cheer up.

Oh yeah, and check out the thread about the J sigNITure Jazzmaster model.

well, i only bought the js, because it was like a mustang with a jag top horn, and my ideas of a decent guitar has changed alot. im looking into a gretsch 6120-western, and a 62 av ri jazzmaster(in surf green or otm) anyways you could make a new nut(haha) by yourself, all it takes is time, precision, and nice files. anyways mate jazzmasters are very beautiful. probly my favorite guitar, it can go from nice clean, dirty blues leads, heavy crunch, you name it it can do it, it gets no justice. the stratocaster(as great as it is) isnt as great as the jazzmaster.

Shut up Beavis (h-h-huh,):D! You could say that I don’t quite have the nuts to attempt to make myself a new nut. Anyways ( "anyways", I really enjoy that particular americanism) I’ll ask my girlfriend about it :D That’s my final testimony on the subject (Ugh! Groan). :D

Anyways, back on topic… Anyone interested in Jazzmasters should check out the Fender Discussion Page. if they haven’t done so. You’ll have an absolute glut of Jazzmaster info there. It’ll be oozing out of your ears.

Jazzmasters really are beautiful guitars. Unfortunately they are costing quite a pretty penny these days thanks to our very own indie rock heroes. They made the guitars so popular during the early 90’s grunge/alternative rock explosion that you can’t even get yr hands on them without sellingblood and pawning all of yr grandmothers jewelry. I wish it were the good ol’ days when you could buy a second hand Jag or Jazzy for a couple of hunded bucks at a crappy pawn store or little instrument shop. But those days are gone forever I suppose.

In 2001 I bought my ’74 Mustang for $495. I saw a few of these on ebay recently for over a grand…..for a Mustang! If you ask the general public about these guitars they hate them. Short scale pieces of *Bob Saget*. But then you can’t even get the RI for a decent price. The thing that REALLY gets me mad is, Ok, you can’t afford to just go out and buy an original 1962 Strat right? That would set you back from $2,000 to $25,000 or more. Well now they have this thing called a relic, a NEW guitar (yeah I know they’ve been out a long time) that looks old, so you can afford it….setting you back from $1,000 to $5,000 roughly……what’s the difference?! I’m setting here buying cheap Squier Strats that feel and sound better (TO ME) than the RI’s and relics do and I’m getting them for under $100 and refinishing and relicing them….which is how I got my ’63 Relic Strat….it’s fully custom and the guitar cost me $30 and the paint was I think $7-8…so not even $50 and I have my favorite guitar…..however now my Mustang rarely gets played :'( . I also like the Jagmasters, you can get them for about $250, they 2nd gens have the full scale necks making them more of a Jazzy. They have solid bodies, with the Jazzmaster shape, not Jaguar. The Jaguar body is slimmer in the horn and is just…different. So you get a Jazzy body and neck, with a strat bridge, and then put in two P-90’s and youve basically got a couple hundred dollar Jazzy. They really arent bad guitars. I dont know why more people dont play Squiers, if they did, Fenders prices might drop a bit. Boycott!

                                RJ.

More people don’t play Squiers because they think having the Fender logo on the headstock legitimizes whatever musical endeavour they’re undertaking. Sad but true.
