I think i’ve finally figured out the mystery to j’s fuzz. You first need an american big muff with the sustain and volume at 10 and the tone at about 1 o’clock and a superfuzz coming after it set on the treblier fuzz and have that cranked to 10. to get the wah sound he has i use a vox wah and put it after the muff and the fuzz and run a russian big muff that has everything on 10. Also the key is to use a decent tube amp with the reverb cranked to 10 and you should have "j’s tone"

            cool, make soundclips.

my ds1 is crap, but ont the neck+bridge pickup on my jazzmaster, it sounds like j’s live tone, really bright and gainy. perfect for that the wagon sound.

That’s a good combo! I always thought that a dimed muff sounded most like his main distorted sound. But The Super fuzz will give you that nice violin sustain tone for leads when combined with the Muff.

I think th you guys would find the Boss OD a good companion for the Big Muff. It’s more tone ful and not as white noisy as a DS-1. I AB’ed them this morning and the OD blows the DS1 away. Good thing is they are a dime a dozen, like ds-1’s so you can’t go wrong with either.

Yes, there should be 2 muffs definately for J’s sound. Getting a Russian one soon, Reverb at 10 is bullshit, His signal sounds completely dry.

                    I agree – I don’t hear much reverb.

I hear some echo in some solos. There was reverb on one song on bug, I juts forgot which one it was, but it was that dick dale fast style all wet reverb. and it wasn’t part of a song.

I don’t think two fuzzes are needed to reproduce J’s tone. I have a reissue Big Muff and I can come pretty close to J’s tone with it. When playing leads with it I use the EH LPB1 with it to saturate the tone even more, J probably uses his Germania to do that. And though his leads sound dry I am almost certain there is at least a little reverb on the leads to make them sound thicker. I didn’t realize how close I could get to J’s tone until I started recording, it always sounds a little different recorded than when it comes out of your amp.

It does! I think you do need 2 and more fuzzes for it, One soft, one hard, one to boost so the tone comes out kinda like on the Freak scene solo. Its all about different settings that he used and finding them out. Like every song has a diferent sound. But I think amps are more important to get his tone.

He uses a Germania, but I dont think it was a part for old Dinosaur. I’ve heard more things abbout him using that to boost his wah and mostly that he uses it live.

Any info on his wah? I heard its a Roger Mayer wah, but all I could find is that it was some wah with different modes and it looks like a spaceship.#

Yeah you can hear reverb on the Get Me solo I think.

for the last few years J has used a wah made by Geoffrey Teese. He runs the Real McCoy Custom company.

The RMC 2 is a production model of the wah J uses and has a seperate external volume control, plus a rotary switch to select different sweep capacitors to raise or lower the tone of the wah sweep, plus a Q control to vary the tone further.

He used the Roger Mayer Vision wah around the time Hand It Over came out and used one when he played with J + the Fog.

Some of his earlier wah’s were also modified by Roger Mayer.

                            – earlier Dinosaur stuff was probably a Vox or Dunlop wah

Haha, the Budda company said that J used one of their Buddwahs. Which isn’t impossible, because it has a great sweep and is a great little thing. Might get it some day.

i think j used a different setting for different songs thats why we all always wonder what sound exactly he got,but the most important are j has using a vintage pedal only & thats why i dont care about getting his sound 100%. As long as you guys have bigmuff, mxr blue box, superfuzz, wah pedal, superchorus, flanger, you guys are in dinosaur jr world.

i still waiting for the soundclip and pic!
