              Sixteen Horsepower – Folklore
Their new album, a little more quiet than before, but very impressive (although a little too short…..)

Finally. My brothers tape copy was wearing thin, and I’ve never managed to uncover a used copy.

                        Welp, here is June’s haul:

Lemonheads: "Creator" and "Lick". — An Ex from a decade ago sd how much better the older, harder Lemonheads was compared to the moe melodic, later stuff. I don’t agree, (so much for marriage) but I do not disagree either. It is like two different bands. With all of the lineup changes over the years, it makes sense. One thing that is noticable in comparing these two to albums like "Ray" and "C’mon feel" is Dando’s maturation as a songwriter. With the older stuff, that same flow is evident, only the wordings and ideas are simpler. Found these for about 5 bucks apiece in the cheapie bin at a local supermarket. I is
                        with luck sometimes.

The John Doe Thing– "Kissing So Hard" and "Meet John Doe" – Eponymous.
Why someone would return these to the used bin, I can understand if you are not a fan of Doe. The delivery is odd for straight-ahead rock and roll love songs, and is not the punk a fan of "X" would like
or expect. However, to me, these records are the ore and my brain is the pickaxe. The harmonies are smooth, the lyrics are heartfelt and the music is middle-of-the road rock, to country, to rockabilly on the softer side, Will make for good traveling tunes. Kill Rock Stars said Doe "… wil never let you down.". I agree he does not if the urge to limit expectations to previous works can be avoided.

Ooops… gotta go. Will add more today or tomorrow. Sorry about the length of these but I am happy that some risks have paid off and would like to give to you all some suggesstions as you have to me. By the way, thanks.

                              To finish off from yesterday,

                              Pete Yorn– "musicforthemorningafter".

Yorn, I think, is a great songwriter and composer. I cannot say his greatest strength is from orignality or derivation but more a combination of the two. I have not sat down and tried to name all of the influences I heard while listening to "morning" because as soon as I go over them, Yorn floors me with something of his own in the arrangement of the music, words or their own interplay. It’s worth a try, indeed, a fun. sweet album.

Lastly, I lucked out with a limited edition containg cover songs on a second disc. Even through I am not a Springsteen fan, I love this more soulful version of "Dancing in the Dark". Yorn’s version of "China Girl" is also super.

The White Stripes– "White Blood Cells"

Well, I already caved in to The Strokes, so I figured, what the hell, go all the way out to the critic’s hoedown. So far, I like it for the rawness in the harder songs and the hooks in the softer ones. I am sure they will grow on me some more after I put the disc away for a bit. Definitley, some closer listening is needed. I like it.

                              Sonic Youth– "Murray Street"

Yay! Let’s hear it again and again! After "Dirty" and "Experimental Jet Set", I fell off the train with SY, mainly due to my inability to find the "art" in much of the noise. On "Murray", SY sees to have found every strength and put them all together seamlessly. Every single note seems to be placed perfectly.

If the old bull about J. making it ok to uses solos in alt rock is true, then SY makes it attractive to use long, exploratory jamming. The transitions, or bridges, if you will, in this release are very well timed and perhaps that is why all the jamming works out.

On track two, "Disconnection Notice", Thurston Moore sings, "…Your secret Mona Lisa hides behind her smile." A fellow fan of the local South Bend, IN band Clark had that same line on the top of her website before "Murray" came out. Saw Clark Friday (who are releasing their first disc Wed. and then heading to Cali and then Florida for a tour. Yay Clark!!{will do a thread on them soon}) and asked her about the line. She said it came from At The Drive In. Another band deified by SY, or?????
