…Three Apples High. Funky fun trio that ranges in too many styles to define, but jazz stands out being that "they don’t sing" as many seem to respond to hearing them. Their playing does the singing and improvisation was at quite a high level last night, the show was in a pizza parlor/bar. Little room to dance but i made my space useful and got down a bit, sober no less, watch out for this band if you dig cool new groove type deals…
September 11, 2004 at 5:55 pm #102765on Thursday night I saw the Canadian band the Stills here in Hamburg in the Logo club — it’s another of these contemporary "the" bands, although you can’t really lump them all together.
The Stills have just their first album out, Logic Will Break your Heart, which has quite a lot sound elements I like, like shredding walls of guitars, melancholic vocals, in some parts inspired by the Smiths or the Cure, but in general with uplifted spirits and danceable but non-monotonous beats.
Although they just have their first record out, they’re quite well known already, as they’ve been touring with the Strokes and the Shins, and their song ‘Lola Stars and Stripes’ has been a minor hit in the UK.
The Stills right started the set with the best known song Lola, to give the show a good upbeat, which I can only endorse. The guitar walls were really good and the sound was danceable, even though there are quite a few stop and go parts within the songs.
The crowd was dancing & cheering in a friendly way without moshing, and everyone was in good spirits, contradicting to the melancholic aspects of the bands’ sound. But everyone was getting the underlying optimism I guess.
Well, it was a nice show of a contemporary newcomer band and I’m glad I went, although I wouldn’t say I’m a big fan. But if they would have sold the album there, I would have bought it
September 14, 2004 at 12:03 pm #102766Utrecht de Helling / Ron Sexsmith / 12 september 2004
Fantastic gig last sundaynight. I’ve seen Ron twice before in Amsterdam, small hall Paradiso, now a bigger venue (still to small for a man with his talents). When I came to Utrecht I went to the wrong hall (tivoli) but overthere there were three nice man to show me where "de Helling" was. One of the guys was Ron Sexsmith, the others were his bandmembers. You can Imagine I was thrilled by that. We had a nice chat about being on the road and he asked me what songs I would like to hear that night. Well ofcourse one of my fav’s "Strawberry blonde". I also asked him if the rumour is true that he plays the McCartneytune "Warm and beautiful"sometimes. Well according to Ron it is a misunderstanding. Anyhow we walked to that venue, my girlfriend took some pictures of us, awesome!!.
The show was great. Sarah Slean opened for Ron, sarah also from Canada was nice. Tori Amos, meets cyndi Lauper, meets Kate Bush, with a touch of Ann Pierlé, nice but we came for Ron. The sound was fantastic and the songs, great. A lot of retriever, his latest album, but also many songs of the previous albums. He’s got a great band, the drummer can even play cello. And the harmonies, gooseboobs!
The second set, Ron said that he met some """nice guys"""on his way to the hall, and he started the song "Listen what the man said" an oldy of wings (1976?)
After the final encore Ron and his band mingled in the audience to have a beer and a chat. Great night and great show. I ve got some nice pics. If anybody wants some, sent me an emailSeptember 14, 2004 at 2:40 pm #102767cool story & great you enjoyed the gig

I’m not familiar with Ron Sexsmith’s works, but you can’t beat a good live show
September 14, 2004 at 3:31 pm #102768Sounds like a great night Hansione. And a great review of the evening, reading your post made me wish I was there.
What’s your favorite Ron Sexsmith album?September 14, 2004 at 4:02 pm #102769"Robert" wrote:What’s your favorite Ron Sexsmith album?I think Blue boy but Cobblestone Runway and his latest, Retriever are cool too. His older work is sometimes to sweet for me.
BTW its funny, there is a Ron Sexsmith website, the same format as freakscene…
September 14, 2004 at 4:10 pm #102770I think I’ve only heard Whereabouts, will have to check out the other ones.
Before I’d ever heard of Ron Sexsmith a friend and I had a punkband called Faster Crying Sexsmith, after sex pistols, and the smiths. Lame I know, but we were 14.I trust you won’t be leaving us for the sexsmith board Hansione

Nice story about your punkband. I think Sexsmith is anything but the sexpistols, but the melodies of the smiths….September 14, 2004 at 5:01 pm #102772Lol, that’s good to hear
And yeah, agree about the melodies of the smiths.September 14, 2004 at 6:56 pm #102773Hey, Hans(ione), sounds like a great gig, fine review as well! Still remember that show in the small hall of the Paradiso, it’s fun to read our ‘reviews’ from then…

Thanks, and in deed frontrow.
I agree with FC. After reeding so many threads and reactions of some members on the board, it is showing something or a lot of ones personality. It feels like knowing eachother a bit and, realy like a strange, but very nice kind of friendship.
