great experience, when you go to a gig, and surprisingly find the support act to be great, too (or even greater than the main act) :)

last Sunday I saw Soulwax, a Belgian electronic rock band. In a way it was foreseeable what to expect, they played a lot out of their great new album, and they rocked all through the set :)

they came with at least 4 keyboards, and the drummer often only played some cymbals over the electronic stomp, so the basis of the music is clearly electronic, but what’s really amazing is the fat and rough guitar sound which comes alongside the electronics, and which adds to a very danceable, rocking sound. I was kinda sure that they’re a great live band, and I was definitely right.

…right on my way to the gig I was goofy enough to lose my purse with all money, underground season ticket, company ID …and the show tickets  :o :(
well, my company was so nice to take me in, luckily it wasn’t sold out.
I would have never thought of getting my things back, but today the nice finder called me in the company to tell me where I could meet him to get my stuff  nothing was missing and he refused to take anything for it. …still overwhelmed! :):):)

Hey FC, good to hear that there are still (some) honest people around…. 8)

….don’t know about Soulwax, I’ve got their album for a couple of weeks now, and I don’t like it, loved their previous one, but when I am listening to this one I’ve got the feeling that the sound is more important than the songs…..

what a relief ! + what a great story … glad to hear it all worked out in the end

…yeah, the sound is kinda the main thing about it, but I also like the songs on the new Soulwax-album. Isn’t the song "a ballad to forget" heartbrakingly beautiful? I also liked the previous album, but the new one also works great for me :)

…last night I saw: Kid & Khan: just by accident I found out only yesterday afternoon that "Kid" is actually Kid Congo Powers  :!: the guitar legend of Gun Club, Cramps and Bad Seeds fame, doing a weird trash dancefloor project together with the German Electronica guy "Khan" aka Can Oral.
as the club is just around my corner, I thought it was a funny idea to check out what Kid Congo is doing nowadays.

it was a weird show, basically it was electronic dance music coming out of a machine (to be modified by Khan in a virtuoso manner) and the two guys, who were hopping around on stage, singing/shouting and joking around. very obviously they had a lot of fun. then and when Kid Congo took one of the guitars and played some very unique and characteristic sounds, but in this surrounding these sounds added to the electronic landscape. In the best moments it had Fall quality.
in the end they even did the Cramps’ "Goo Goo Muck", although the song was more quoted than seriously played, the guitar was enjoyble :)🙂

It was great to see Kid Congo being so full of energy, having a lot of fun with what he’s doing. and it was a very interesting occasion for me to explore the electronic underground music scene…

I even talked some words with Kid, and he’s just such a nice and funny guy.
I’m glad that I went :D

The Soundtrack Of Our Lives,
they put on a brilliant show. Sadly I was so utterly and completely drunk that I can’t give a more detailed review.

Division Of Laura Lee,
not drunk enough to enjoy this one.

cool, I’ve read quite a lot about them lately and checked out their new record. I think their sound is kinda old-school in a weird and cool way, and sounds fresh at the same time. I’m sure they’re a great live band. guess I’d go to see them if they came down here.

too bad you weren’t in the condition to really follow what’s going on on stage… hope you survived the hangover! :)

Hubert’s Hootenanny – la Bonbonniere, Maastricht – 11/7/2004

"Amigo da Musica"Hubert van Hoof (…he has the best radio show in this country, specializing in roots-rock/americana/garage/punk, shame it can only be heard on our regional radio station L1….. ) held his annual musical party in one of the most beautiful locations of this country:

Bands appearing included dutch bands Shiner Twins (tex-mex, blues, rock&roll, ideal band for a party like this  ), the Cooder Connection (sort of Ry Cooder tribute band, quite good… 8), and local weeping willow Arno Adams (solo singer-songwriter, a little out-of-place in this party-atmosphere).

The two absolute highlights: the Hackensaw Boys (from Charlotsville, VA), they looked and sounded like they had come running straight from the set of the movie "Oh brother were art thou" as they performed their short & fast set standing in a circle in the middle of the hall, great stuff….. 8)

the Hackensaw boys then did a final song on stage together with the Belgian Seatsniffers (…as the ‘Seatsniffin’ Hackensack Boys’… ), after which the Seatsniffers (guitar/slap bass/drums) played a blazing set of dirty rockabilly/rock’n’roll/boogie, to bring the party to a steaming close…. 8) 8)

All in all, a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, nice audience, nice bands, great sound, nice atmosphere, and like I said before, a great location to have a party….. 8) 8)

last night I was on a very weird festival, it was a festival of gothic/industrial/EBM bands, and hell, you can guess that I wasn’t the only one dressed in black

the bands were Hocico, Spetznaz, Icon Of Coil, God Module and KiEw …well, I haven’t heard of any of them before, either :D
but that didn’t matter, it was a good occasion to get an impression, what Industrial/Electronic Body Music is about today.
Nevertheless the Industrial/Gothic scene is much more alive and kicking than I would have ever thought. there were way over 1000 people, far more than at shows where I usually go to, and all that for bands which are not broadly popular. The fans were either fossils from the 80’s but more of them were younger and seem to enjoy to revive the 80’s, a time when they were just born.

I enjoyed a lot to watch all these people who were dressed in black, many of them with lots of leather and fancy.

Musically, all I knew before were some imprecise memories about the bands Front 242, KMFDM or Laibach — and about the sound of the bands yesterday, I have to say that it was a lot like the last 15 years didn’t happen. The bands sounded quite exactly like the bands out of that genre back in time

Throughout the night, the very hard beats and the keyboard clouds with the rough growl of singing wasn’t varied much, but that was exacly what the fans wanted.

nevertheless, EBM is a Techno predecessor, and therefore very danceable, an aspect which I liked a lot, but after a while I painfully missed the one or other guitar sound. I mean, bands like Soulwax or the Faint successfully combine that kind of electronic beats with fat guitar sounds, but that seems to be unknown terrain for these Industrial bands I’ve seen yesterday.

I hope I don’t sound critical, as I enjoyed the night very much as an expedition into not very well known terrain

on Wednesday, I saw David Eugene Edwards of Wovenhand (who is, of course, also singer of
16 Horsepower :D)
The band consisted of a drummer who did a great job, replacing an entire band. And there was David Eugene Edwards, who played seated as always, he changed between acoustic and elecric guitar and a banjo. The venue was also seated, which marked the show to be a more calm one.
The show was impressing because of the overall intensity, which made every song to either an incantation or even almost exocism. Although the singer remained cool and relaxed himself between the songs, you started wondering, what’s haunting him… :?

the crowd was cheering, devotional, admiring, with big respect to what was shown on stage. it was cool to see so many people being into this, even though it wasn’t comparable to a band performance of 16 Horsepower.

Yesterday, I saw the US singer/songwriter Tara Jane ONeil. it’s true, I haven’t heard of her before, but in the description it said, that she has played with Sebadoh, Come and Low, so this kindled me, and I thought it could be interesting to check out. her sound is described as post-rock, which is the quiet sort of eletronic/guitar sound as in Mogwai or Stereolab.

the place was small, I don’t know if it’s big enough for 100 people. it was quite full, and the people were into it, they were all really quiet and polite throughout the performance, which was very calm itself. TJO on electric guitar and vocals was accompanied by Christina who was operating mixed electronic tools and a drumkit (which consisted of a cymbal :P) and Samara on violin (Samara also opened with a solo set)
The music was very slow and calm, but at the moments when electronic beats and loops blended into Tara’s guitar, it worked out very well and all in all the show had more than a few beautiful moments :)

it’s not exactly my kind of music, as it’s quite too calm for me, but I really enjoy to check out new & interesting bands, and it was a nice evening spent :)
…and again I was wondering about the motivation of overseas musicians who make the long trip to Europe to play in tiny venues in front of a few dozens of people. But I’m glad they do, of course :D

Hey that`s cool you saw Tara Jane O`Neil :D she`s played with a ton of bands. She started out with Rodan(they did one album called Rusty that I actually got on SS just recently)and Retsin(a duo with Cynthia Nelson of Ruby Falls)and guesting as you said with Sebadoh,Come, and Low.She also played drums for Containe(Fontaine Toups from Versus` side band). Was Christina`s last name Files?she plays on my fave album of the year:Shannon Wright`s Over The Sun.She also used to play with The Swirlies and Mary Timony.I saw a TJO concert(just about 20 minutes actually)on Epitonic.com awile back, not sure if it`s still there. It was good though, kinda mellow stuff with cello.
Cool you saw Woven Hand too :)

so cool you’ve heard of TJO before, SG :D
I don’t know Christina’s last name, I didn’t find it in the show announcement, and on stage she was only introduced with her first name.

last night I saw something completely different in a different surrounding, I saw the most wonderful Mercury Rev playing in a big hall in front of 3000 people (…well, that was because Nick Cave was playing after them :P)
the Rev show was short, way too short, like 40 minutes, but sweet, they played like they had all time on earth, developing the songs from a mellow start to the wall of sound out of wailing guitars and multiple layers of keyboards, which I love them for. and of course there was the throughout charming singer, who appeared to be happy about everyone in the crowd to be there :)🙂

Nick Cave… I didn’t have him on my list, I saw his name on tour lists, but never thought for a sec to go to his show. I kinda lost him out of sight after in the early 90ies, and never really got back to it. although I admit, I admired him in my teenager years.

the crowd was 3000 people who were willing to pay 45 Euros for the ticket, and they were… normal. anyone of them. I felt eccentric, only because I was dressed in black  …this crowd kinda shocked me

Nick still has this saturnine and cool aura he’s known for, which was interesting enough to watch, to make me stay. he played almost only new songs, glued together by this gospel choir which I already didn’t like on the new album. some of the sounds were still rough and cool enough to enjoy them, though, so I went home moderately entertained  :P

It probably was Christina Files, since she plays with a number of people.I should`ve mentioned that Tara Jane`s playing with Sebadoh was on Bakesale. She plays drums on Jason`s songs like Not2Amused,Got It,S Soup, and Dramamine. The last gig Rodan did was with Sebadoh so I guess that`s how they met.
Cool you saw the Rev and Cave :)

saw two nice new german bands on Saturday, Helter Skelter and Schwarz auf Weiss. the latter has huge Ska influences on a modern sounding basis, which makes the music very good to party to.

Even better I liked the German band Helter Skelter, who have a great classic beat/pop/indie sound with very cool songs, and they seem to really be at the start to live up to their big name :)🙂
the guitars kinda reminded me a lot to J, although I’m not sure if they’re even familiar with Dino/J. Maybe it’s just the general lively influence which came through :?
