saw one of my all time heroes recently Grant Hart ex of Husker Du & Nova Mob…

Solo acoustic/electric show, his voice is still amazing, hadn’t seen him for a couple years…better than ever!!! Came out without a set list, took requests & played 24 songs over an hour & 1/2. Had some trouble with his guitar, apparently has a floating bridge, customs checked the guitar then stuck a huge customs tag under the bridge…breaking bits of it off…

Charming as ever, interacting with the crowd constantly, played a lot of Husker Du songs…but don’t count on a Husker Du reunion happening at all, just doesn’t seem possible they can overcome the crap between them. SST apparently still owes over $100,000 in royalties…

Plans on reissuing a remixed version of The Last Days of Pomnpeii, to be released soon, also working on getting a new release out soon. Hope to check out some of his art exhibits in Minneapolis in July.

May 25, 2005 at 2:20 pm #102825Cool you saw Grant Hart!
Lots of Husker songs too
I heard that Eleventh Dream Day cover Evergreen Memorial Drive sometimes at live shows
May 26, 2005 at 1:26 pm #102826Last night I saw Lou Barlow at Paradiso Amsterdam. Very charming to see him enthousiastic about putting back together Dinosaur jr. Somebody in the crowd called to Lou: Do you mean it??
Lou Answered: Just because I’m waring glasses, doesn’t mean I’m cynical all the time
He was very good, I liked the new song a lot about The stephfather of Jezus, the brother of Jozef. It was only Lou and his guitar and occassionaly a keyboard. He also used a microphone with a distorded effect on it.
Great concert at the small hall of Paradiso. To bad that i am on holidays when Dino will steal Paradiso away
After Lou a nice gig by Vic Chesnutt. His sister was the drummer. All she did was chick chik boem. Moe tucker or the other part of the White Stripes are Dave Grohll compared with her. The songs by Chesnutt were great though, his voice sometimes reminds me of Eugene Edwards and sometimes of Neil Diamond
.
Vic even mentioned his good friend Bob Mould, wich whom he wrote a couple of songs with in his house…..May 26, 2005 at 4:08 pm #102827Are you sure it was his sister because Tina Chesnutt is his wife but she plays bass so maybe it was his sister…

Best description of Vic`s voice I can think of is Guy Clark on crack
May 26, 2005 at 11:21 pm #102828I assumed it was his sister, you’re probably right. Anyway she drummed like a sissy

Wed Sep 07: Brussels, Ancienne Belgique

Sounds pretty pleasing, I still haven’t recovered from the 1st track off his last disc Modulate
, but this release might help me forget it
The new disc Body of Song is out there on some file sharing sites, Bob Mould is very anti filesharing so he’s fuming, Grant Hart encourages downloads…go figure, polar opposites on another issue
May 27, 2005 at 6:26 pm #102830Last night I saw … And you will know us by the Trail of Dead at the Wiltern in Los Angeles.
The show absolutely kicked ass. Well, expect for We are Wolves.
The (International) Noise Conspiracy had a whole lot of energy. Lets say I was tired from just watching them.
and Trail of Dead was AWESOME. At the end of the show, they let the people in the front get up on stage, so there were about 85 people on stage. The people were up there so tight Conrad had to use the mic to ask if the drums were still back there.. There was a nice mix between the old stuff and the new stuff. I was figureing that most of the show us going to Worlds Apart, but it seemed evenly split.
My ears stopped ringing at 8 AM this morning.
May 28, 2005 at 5:45 am #102831cool reviews all around
🙂
I can really recommend to ask Hansione via pm for his Arcade Fire pics from the Amsterdam show, they are awesome!
and Hansione, thanks for the inpressions from the Lou Barlow show. his remaks on stage are really funny.Coma Girl, thanks for the tour dates. As Grant Hart will also stop in my city, I think I’ll gonna be there.
And Carl, cool story about all these people up there on stage

me, I just saw the band "I am Kloot" from Manchester. their music is quite classic Brit pop with a singer/songwriter approach. it was an excellent show, and the more I listen to their new album "Gods and Monsters" the more I can’t stop listening… I can recommend to check them out!
May 30, 2005 at 11:49 am #102832last night I saw the Go-Betweens, like I always try to do when they’re in town. it’s incredible how they maintained the main elements of their australian country inspired pop sound over the decades. they started in the late 70’s, had a long break during the 90’s, and then it happened what all fans have been waiting for over 10 years: a full reunion in 2000, with the intention to stay together, and to record new albums

and the new material of the 3 new albums since then fit perfectly with the older songs. their sound of timeless, lighthearted beauty shows its underlying weirdness best in the last third of their shows when band and audience lift off in exuberant jam sessions, and when the encores (five to my count, yesterday) only come to their end, because the band is almost about to keel over
May 31, 2005 at 4:05 am #1028335 encores
… awesome
May 31, 2005 at 1:37 pm #102834yeah, the Go-Betweens never disappoint anyone with their encore approach.
the last time they entered the stage at a time, when the lights and tape music were already on again, and the stage helpers started to remove the equipment. the hall manager said NO, but the band said YES, and so they played another two songs
June 3, 2005 at 5:49 pm #102835Hey FC, the Go-Betweens are a great band, just got their latest album, and I think it’s one of their best….

Did you know that Go-Between Robert Forster has recorded a great cover of Grant Hart’s ‘2541’? It’s on his ‘I had a New York girlfriend’ (covers) album, I found it in a bargain bin for about 3 euros a couple of years ago…..
June 4, 2005 at 5:26 am #102836cool, I don’t know that record by Robert Forster. I’ll look out, maybe it’s circulating somewhere.
weird enough that the Go-B’s are deservedly longtime-successful over here in continental Europe, while nobody cares about them back in their home country Australia, or in the US, where their main musical influences come from.June 11, 2005 at 10:20 am #102837Tori Amos !!!
wow is she hot! i love seattle!
June 21, 2005 at 10:18 am #102838last night I saw Antony & the Johnsons in a big venerable classical theater here in Hamburg, with all things associated like ushers, first and second bell and lots of highly cultural atmosphere
well, Antony’s friend and mentor Lou Reed made some musical contributions to a stage play there some years ago, so this could be the reason for the location.
with several hundreds of devoted listeners, the theater was full, and I guess most of them were there for the first time, like me
well, Antony’s one of the exceptional voices in music business, and one of the exceptional characters in any case, who lives his gender ambiguity with senitivity and confidence.
at first both artist and audience seemed to be a bit in awe of the location, as people even didn’t even dare to make a sound when Antony entered the stage, because the guitarist was still playing some intro notes… also the performance started cautious and restrained with some of the slow piano songs one after the other. the band consisted of an electric bass, an acoustic guitar, accordion, violin and cello, and Antony on the piano. I missed some drums, which would have pulled the performance from chamber music to the singer/songwriter side of things, but probably this was well planned…
in the second half of the show things started to get more familiar, as Antony started to talk to the crowd, sung a duet with each of us (as we all of us were humming like he told us).
At some times I had the feeling that his huge voice wasn’t always used to capacity, but this might only be a sign of the unfathomed potentials there.
At the moment when he went into the song (or prayer?) "Hope There’s Someone" everything finally fell into place, and I was just sitting in awe, feeling that one of the greatest songs was performed by one of the greatest singers right before me
and after that the main show was over, followed by standing ovations and 3 encores. So this was one of the most remarkable shows I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m all glad I went
I can also highly recommend the new record "I am a Bird Now" which came out on Secretly Canadian, the Songs:Ohia label.
