Kool, sounded like a wonderful show
Thanks for tha review
His 1st album is also a beautyAugust 20, 2005 at 8:27 pm #102840…Soulive. They were killer as i expected. Didn’t expect the horns but i figured at least a guest horn or two, but i guess they always tour with five people total; keyboards, drums, guitar, trumpet, sax. They were formed as a keys, guitar, drums jazz outfit in the style of Jimmy Smith and Richard "Groove" Holmes, but they have evolved into a brusting with energy funk band. The drummer even sings a bit which isn’t very jazz at all, but works really well. The show was outside and the weather stayed dry which was cool literally being rain off and on all day, perfect conditions at show time. They did a smoking cover of Hendrix’s "Crosstown Traffic" sans words. For jazz heads that haven’t heard they should check out Soulive, much fire displayed on stage. I’d like to see them in a club. Need the loudness…
November 11, 2005 at 2:53 pm #102841Teenage Fanclub, Nighttown, Rotterdam 11/7/2005
…not exactly last night, but who cares…..
A windy Monday night in Rotterdam, and most of the people had stayed at home, so at nine o’clock the venue was still quite empty, when George-who-tunes-guitars-for-Teenage-Fanclub informed us that the band was stuck on the highway with a broken-down van some 30 miles from Rotterdam, and that he would do a couple of songs while we were waiting…. Luckily George-who-tunes-guitars-etc. turned out to be quite a good singer/songwriter in the Billy Bragg vein, so it was a pleasant wait until just after ten, when Teenage Fanclub hit the stage, the fact that there were only about 150 people didn’t matter to them, they did a blistering two hour set of one pure pop gem after the other, must be one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen….
, Sadly, after a great, rocking "Everthing Flows" the show ended without encores with the words "Sorry, we haven’t eaten yet…", may they have found a good restaurant at that time of night….
December 17, 2005 at 5:43 am #102842Last night I went to see the Lovell Sisters and Vic Chesnutt!
The story is I really didn’t want to go out to this show but was encouraged to by a friend.
The Lovel sisters blew me away, my heart was lifted up………………………………..This is a group of shows called Athens 441
They happens several times a year and are put together by Joe Silva, after the musicians play there is a question and answer time.
I think it’s pretty cool. Anyway the Lovel sisters, the baby, the mandalin player is only 14 years old, her middle sister only 16……
They rocked bluegrass style and then Vic……………………………….
All I can say is Vic is brilliant, he is a great American songwriter……………..he played songs off of his album "Ghetto Bells" which I don’t have and now this morning on my way to work I wish I had………………
Lots of great songs like "Horrible Friend" and a piece that ended with "Send in the robots" sung to the tune of "send in the clowns" with the ending bit so stunning it went a little like
"Isn’t it rich?
Isn’t it queer,
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
And where are the robots?
There ought to be robots.
Don’t worry there here.between songs in the middle he also played his own version of Petula Clarks "Downtown" and turned it into this most beautiful piece Vic Style……….I have to run out the door, wish I could share more. .

Last Tuesday I saw “the hackensawboysâ€
June 5, 2006 at 8:43 am #102844primal scream in store @ hmv, oxford st – london …
it was awesome … the first time i’ve ever seen them live, but i’ve seen them loads of times on tv and they are one of my favourite bands, so i was really excited … i entered a contest a few weeks back to win tix to the event, but when the guy from sony/bmg phned last week to say we’d won, i was like, ‘yeah, right’ so i was really psyched when the wristbands actually arrived … as the show was in hmv i was a bit dubious about the sound before the show started, but it was really good … and they all seemed really into it … and all the people there were really into it and really excited to be there … which was a refreshing change from the club atmoshpere you sometimes get when people try to out-cool eachother …

anyhow … they came on at 11.15ish + they played for 45 mins or so… they played songs from screamadelica, extrminator etc. rather than just sticking to the current release …
speaking of current releases, the album was released at midnight (when the show ended) + you could buy the album, get it signed + have a chat / take photos etc.
We got Mani to sign his portrait in the stone roses – second coming cd cover … the signing table lineup started with mani + worked its way thru the band – ending with bobby g and of course, boys being boys, they all completely defaced his picture which was a good laugh … my husband john got a few pics with them as well (taken by me) … mani’s pulling a funny face (surprise, surprise) and bobby g + john looked really sombre … i guess b/c i forgot to warn them with a photo countdown or whatever (amateur!) … anyways … bobby lives in our neighbourhood + we said we see him around all the time (even up at the pool), which he thought was kind of funny …
anyhow … i’ve briefly met him before, but this time we had a longer chat + i was really surprised at how softly spoken + really nice he was … he shook our hands + said he’d see us around …
so there you go …
June 17, 2006 at 11:11 am #102845Last night as a reward for my son having great grades on his report card (he is 10 and just finished 4th grade), we decided to go to our local club for the early all ages show. This was no ordinary show, this was going to be rock n’ roll history. So maybe this was a history lesson during summer break, man what kind of father have I become?
Anyway we saw Marky Ramone play 30 classic Ramones songs with members of the Jet City Fix playing bass and guitar. Marky had some guy with him singing all the songs. It sounded great with Marky’s commentary inbetween songs. It was great down to the 1-2-3-4 to starting off every song.
My son loved it, and was super stoked when they closed the show with Blitkreig Bop, his favorite Ramones song. It was way cool to see him throw his fist in the air screaming HEY! HO! LETS GO!
June 17, 2006 at 2:07 pm #102846Great story Tonas,
I could see your son raising his fist (in my imagination ofcourse) I wish my father would have take me to gigs when I was 10….diferent times!
June 17, 2006 at 4:26 pm #102847Sonic Youth. It was a great show, but the opening band (Be Your Own Pet) wasn’t that great. Mark Ibold played bass with SY and I heard people talking about Malkmus and Nastanovitch being in the crowd that night.

June 18, 2006 at 10:09 am #102849Sometimes she played bass, sometimes she played guitar, sometimes she just sang. They were doing double bass playing on some songs.

Girls vs Boys had two bassists
June 18, 2006 at 9:51 pm #102852Stiff Little Fingers last week, as good as I’ve ever seen them (which is many times) and perhaps as good as the first time I saw them on their reunion tour in ’89. Tons of raw energy, great tunes, loads of political and basically human conviction pouring out of Jake Burns’ throat. They just don’t make bands anymore like those of the class of ’77. No bullshit, no irony, no posturing, just the full-on liberating power and sound of rock-n-roll played by guys who believe it’s about more than simply entertainment. And you can’t really ask for more than that.
June 21, 2006 at 6:58 pm #102853the Bauhaus and NIN… very good show
