Rosa, I had no idea of any critisism of the Red Cross before I posted that information, I know that the headquarters here in Athens is next door to my parish/school and they have tons of people and vans and trucks leaving each hour. The Red Cross is putting together host families here also. I really have no idea of their inner operations but thanks for including many other options for help.

I didn’t mean to suggest that people shouldn’t use the Red Cross at all, just that they seem to have a more suspicious track record than some of the other charities. But that might just be because they’re the biggest, and the bigger an organization, the more room for error/corruption/whatever. These groups are all staffed by people, and…there are good people and bad people everywhere. If you can see that your local Red Cross is doing great things, by all means, support them 8)

Watching the news reports from new orleans is somewhat like watching the world fall apart. First nature pulls out it’s pandemonium machinery, then human kind looses sight of itself -with all the reports of looting(I’m not talking about breaking into stores to get food and water, that I think has to be written down on the account for self preservation -seeing as help seems to be coming in slow,), murders and rapes -even in and around the shelters. The direct damage the hurricane caused is frightening and unbelivable on its own account, but what has followed in the wake of it makes it all even more tragic and depressing.

I’m not sure how good our(norwegian,) news coverage of the situation is, therefor I’d like to ask:

The impression I’m getting from the news is that help was allmost non existant for too long. And when things finally started to happen, it wasn’t nearly as good as it should have been. ?

If so, how could the government fail so totally ? I would think they are "used to" "situations like this," with hurricanes/storms coming in on florida every year. I’m putting the "’s in there because I’m well aware that there are no plausible way to be fully prepared for a disaster of this magnitude, however the experiences from floride and such areas should have given them a lot of usefull knowledge on how to handle such events.

Could there be any truth to the speculations about the bush administration not taking the problem seriously, or grasping the full extent of it ?

Thats what I believe, I just think if lily white Moms in tennis dresses were standing on rooftops with their children dressed inthe summer collection of Lilly Pulitzer holding signs saying "God, help us" they would have brought what little National Guard we have left in on the first night.

My husband thinks differently, he said it has everything to do with the communication grid being down and having streets under water so that you can’t even navigate the city and try to communicate in person, no one (in power, the police, government, etc.) could tell where anybody was or get any message to anyone. He says "give them a break", they should have prepared for flooding better because they knew that could happen but now they have a monumental "cluster Fuck" that could not have been avoided even with preparation because of the lack of communication. So it is anyones guess to try and put it all together.

im with you annastefka , if it was the brittney spears compound that was all flooded out with mousketeers knee deep in shit, they would have had the marines there jand carrying each kid to safety…. i’d have to say the po-po’s in louisiana are still pretty boss hogg about the whole thing…. i would have made a pedal powered boat out of empty kegs a long time ago … the first few days woudl have been drinking the beer and fashioning the raft…. but i was in boy scouts and shit.. i always loooked forward to natural disasters when i was a kid…

Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately, I thought I would be able to physically go there and perhaps volunteer but time and money is a factor. Perhaps I can only step back and help from afar with a donation–even though I would rather go. :(
