Allison-is "The Whole of The Law" an Only Ones song?Yo La Tengo covered it on their Painful album,it`s credited to Peter Parrett(sorry if I spelled that wrong),maybe it`s a Parrett solo tune.Never see anything by the Only Ones around here.
Was at the music store this morning,All the early Ramones albums are being reissued and remastered, saw the first 4 albums this morning,$24.99 each.they have alot of bonus stuff on it,Leave home has a 76 concert included on it.

Here`s some more lyrics:

Tom Waits-Hold on
"Go ahead and call the cops, you don`t meet nice girls in coffee shops"

"You build it up and wreck it down, and you burn your mansion to the ground."

Husker Du-Crystal
"Civilization falls in it`s grave, technology throws over the dirt."(used that one on a exam in high school)

-Private Plane
"Hope is a private plane"(used that in high school but changed hope to success)

Uncle Tupelo-Nothing
"Don`t call it nothing, this might be all you`ll ever have"

-Chickamauga
"Fight fire with only matches, for my respective trenches"

Neil Young-Thrasher
"They had the best selection, they were poisoned with protection."
-Piece Of Crap
"They cut the forest down to build a piece of crap."

Versus-Bright Light
"I`m sick from meloncholia,my fever is like the sun,I threw up 7 times a day, please make it go away."

Hey Salmiguy,

Yeah that song is an Only Ones song, Peter Perrett wrote most of the tunes…or all of them. Not all of the Only Ones songs/stuff is great, I have some Peter and The Pets stuff that is alright but haven’t put it on in ages. Friend just got a Peter Perrett live deal, have to check that one out!!!

Great Topic!!!!

A couple before I get back to work –

Modest Mouse –

‘Opinions were like kittens, I was giving them away’

‘i said you shouldn’t make facts out of opinions’

‘i’m at my house but i wish that i were at home’

‘i drove around for hours, i drove around for days, i drove around for months and years and never went no place’

‘They gave me a reciept that said I didn’t buy nothin’

‘Talkin shit about a pretty sunset’

‘well it took a lot of work to be the ass i am, and i’m really damn sure that anyone can equally easily fuck you over’

‘it takes a long time but god dies too, but not before he’ll stick it to you’

‘the universe is shaped exactly like the earth,
if you go straight long enough you’ll end up where you were…’

‘why are you judging people so damn hard,
you’re takin’ your point of views a bit too far’

‘Freeze your blood and then stab it into me’

‘Primer grey is the color when you’re done dying’

‘you’re the icing on the cake on the table at my wake’

‘Your mouth moves and you start to talk, but you close your eyes and you loose the thought’

‘You move your mouth
You shake your tounge
You vibrate my eardrums
Your saying words
But you know I’m not listning’

‘We were too creative ordering our drinks and mine stinks’

‘Every time you think your talking you’re just movin your mouth. Every time you think you’re walking you’re just moving the ground’

‘everyone’s a voyeur as they’re watching me watch them watch me right now’

‘I could have told you all that I love you
And in the places you go you’ll see the place where you’re from.
I could have…
And in the faces you meet you’ll see the place where you die.
I could have…
And on the day that you die, you’ll see the people you’d met
I could have…
And in the faces you see you’ll see just who you have been, I wish I could have told you all…’

‘Sociability is just a big smile,
and a big smile is nothing but teeth’

one last one from Tribe Called Quest (parden the crudeness but it is classic)
‘Bust a nut inside your eye, to show you where I come from’

again, I apoligize if that one offends anyone but it kills me

Uncle Tupelo: "I got drunk, and I fell down…."

And my favorite line ever….Waylon Jennings’ Luchenbach, Tx. first line: "The only two things in life that make it worth livin’/Is guitars tuned good and firm feelin’ women."

Ahhhhh.

got to many lines for my own good…or so I’ve been told…oh well

Solar radiation in the dead of nite, love in the middle of a fire fight….honey gonna strike me blind somebodies gotta save my soul…..cause I am the worlds forgotten boy, the one who searches to destroy

Dance to the beat of the living dead, lose sleep baby stay away from bed
raw power got a healing hand,
raw power can destroy a man….raw power is more than soul got a son called rock and roll.

those are by the Stooges

Now I guess I’ll have to tell em, that I got no cerebellum…gonna get my phd I’m a teenage lobotomy

Ramones of course

Allison

ps not offended…pretty funny line

Hey,

Like I said I have way too many lines for my own good…

Great one by Alice Cooper….Caught in a Dream…such a cool song!!!

I need a houseboat
I need a plane
I need a butler and a trip to Spain
I need everything the world owes me
I tell that to myself and I agree

Hey,

Hmmm like I said I have way to many lines for my own good,

You’re makin me
Sorry, sorry somehow
Sorry, sorry somehow

Sorry Somehow by Husker Du…Grant Hart played this last time I saw him….SWEEET

I never felt an urge to say a word
I’d rather listen to the din of
other people closing in on me/I lay in bed
and think of words you should hear
I fall asleep and then they disappear
a fall from grace/from memory

Bob Mould…Tilted

Man, Chicago august 24th for Bob Mould is sounding pretty good to me….

This isn’t a music line but a pretty cool line in a book I was reading….egocentrism blurs the line between reality and desire.

Some Great Modest Mouse Lines:

* Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset:

And I claim I’m not excited with my life any more
So I blame this town, this job, these friends
The truth is it’s myself

I’ve changed my mind so much I cant even trust it
My mind changed me so much I cant even trust myself

* Exit Does Not Exist:

Sunlight 7:20 PM, early September
Standing looking at a photograph
That you do not remember being taken
You look out of breath, and me like I am faking
As a matter of fact I don’t recall this photo being taken
You don’t even actually exist so I just started shaking

Since Will oldham is in the songwriting poll I thought I`d mention some of his lyrics:

Palace Brothers-Meaulnes
"He came by the way of the half million murders,he came by the way of a long list of ironies,he came by the way of the road to Soiux City,he came by the way of the half breeds and lesbians."
"He knew it was in there but still was`nt happy he knew that it was less than the way that it should be,but undaunted unshaven an eagle(or ego) in britches,he set out again to unveil the earths riches."

Palace Brothers-West Palm Beach
"The surf has swallowed him up he`s a memory now,the water is warmer than it has been in weeks, grandma lives just down the road she`s making supper for me tonight, she`s been nice to me since 73 when her son lost his lights, now his ghost is a host rising above the mighty blur, soon some maid would swoon and his soul would capture her,he`s still a fine kid with all that he did he`s a fan of mine."

Palace Music-Weaker Soldier
"Once I was a weaker soldier hanging in the war,but I left like an ape, folded neatly in four."

Palace Brothers-O how I enjoy the light
"O how I despise it,O how I enjoy the light, for the first morning forever, wisdom wealth tag on like afterbirth."

Hey,

This isn’t a line from a song but from a wicked guitar player Wayne Kramer

The internet is punk as f*ck, its about change. It’s a revolt against the old order…Access to the whole wide world of music from our living rooms…Punk as F*ck.

Also provides his definition of Punk and a very cool disclaimer

Punk, as an attitude was meant to break out of the status quo, to throw away old tired idealogies. And for me punk is about stretching music into new and exciting directions.

Who really cares what my or anyones definition of punk is or isn’t. All that matters is what’s in the grooves…PERIOD.

Well said thats for sure, coming from one of the so called godfathers of Punk.

Some song lines that are currently thrilling me

Bob Mould…Moving Trucks

Today is the day I forget all about it
It’s over don’t worry about it
Today I can open the window
Today is the day I can Fly

Bob Mould…Sweet Serene

I needed the rain to wash away indifference
I needed the wind to air out the differences
I needed the sun to warm up my spirits
I need these elements to feel somewhat centered

Bob definitely more positive…cool. So looking forward to his new release…hopefully in September.

Allison

I’m in a Neil Young mood, so here:

well I was chopping down a palm tree when a friend dropped by to ask
if I would feel less lonely if he helped me swing the axe
I said "no it’s not a case of being lonely we have here, I’ve been working on this palm tree for eighty seven years"
He said "go get lost" and walked towards his cadillac
I chopped down the palm tree and it landed on his back
(from The last trip to Tulsa)

I saw you in Mercedes-Benz
practising self-defense
(from Stupid girl)

Hmm, think I’ll put that last one in my signature while waiting to come up with something even cooler

oh, and there’s no messing with the logic of Black Francis:

if man is 5 if man is 5 if man is 5
then the devil is 6 then the devil is 6 then the devil is 6 then the devil is 6
and if the devil is 6
then god is 7 then god is 7 then god is 7

Well, with the indications of the reduced energy density of the universe being close to unity, the topology of the universe is still an open question. Besides, even if the universe was closed (like the surface of the earth), the expansion of the thing makes it impossible to end up in the same place by "going straight long enough" unless going faster than light or having more time than eternity. Modest Mouse oughta do some more background research the way I see it.
