Not a bad vid – locked off camera is a bit boring and the bass is way over mixed (not a good idea as Mr Watt isn’ t exactly a bass genius. what J needs is a bruce foxton -The Jam, for you young uns – to compliment him not drown him out with illjudged runs up the fretboard)

anyone still got the url for the french gig?

                Hey Kockney,

I remember Foxton and The Jam, he was a great bass player. Saw him play in the late 80’s at The Cricketeers club by Oval…it was kinda scary, reminded me of Journey or something. I might have had a few too many pints but it really sounded icky. I think some girl called Watt on playing too many notes for the songs, still would rather have Watt play bass though…only my opinion

Here is a link to the French gig, definitely better sound and picture…

                  Thanks for the url

Yes Foxton, it was just listening to old Jam records and hearing how tight and solid he was. No showing off, just underpinning the guitar and anchoring the rhythm.

‘too many notes’. yes that is pretty much what watt does, plus he likes to play high so clashing with the guitar. Maybe a frustrated axe man – never the best choice for a bass player

In fact, on the french tapes there are for me some excruciatingly embarrasing bits of bass playing that suggest that watt never really learnt to play bass at all and is learning as he goes along

His diaries reveal a kind of spaced out old hippy, nice enough chap no doubt and he uses Mac so he’s obviously got some taste, but I get the impression that somewhere along the line he took some bad acid and has never quite recovered.

To bash Watt is not cool at all. Tell me, when are you jamming with J? New topic please…

                      Hey Kockney,

Funny how people see things so many different ways, my take on Watts diaries are very different then yours. I see him as a very honest & open guy with a heart of gold…trying his best to do whats right for Mascis and dogging on those…GB…who he senses are not giving what they should for the cause. Watt is the 1st to point out the "clams" he hits, but hey he does a pretty good job in my opinion. He had a hellride of a year in 2000, it takes a while to completely recover, physically & mentally. He was having problems with cramping in his hands for a good part of the tour but maintained as best he could…what a trooper!! Really have to give him credit for taking on such a huge job after such a significant illness. Ok enuf of my lecture on Watt

If you want to talk bass players what about Captain Sensible/Ray Burns…wicked bass player and one of the best guitar players I have heard as well…very cool. He is putting something together with Scott Asheton and Sonny Vincent, Captain and Rock Action a rythmn section to die for!!!

ps I would love to see Watt publish his diaries…he could probably pay off his medical bills with the cash from that. Gotta respect a guy who just lets it go on the web for free….very cool.

I don’t think that’s the case. As Watt has said in his diary, he’s playing what J tells him to play. This is just how J wants the bass to be played, I guess. So don’t blame Watt for the bass parts that J has written.

Plus, Watt had to learn as they went along, because the band took hardly any time to practice before they started the first tour. You got to give him some credit for doing as well as he did last year. And when I saw them in March, they were tight as hell.

                          Hey,

Just to clarify the too many notes thing was from week 4 of Watt’s diaries, some girl told Watt he sounded better when he played less notes…apparently didn’t say it so diplomatically and pissed him off.

I forgot to mention that Watt is also a man who loves cats…does it get any better than that…I think not!!!

Thank you (bates and jasper) for restoring my confidence in the faithful… I think Watt is a compliment to J, and George. In my opinion, they mask each other well. He (Watt) really seems to want to be emersed in the vibe J presents. Too many notes, ha! I am in awe when Bass player’s jam out. Watt has tremendous repect for J (the diaries), and J, Watt. Watt, keep rocking on…
