Anyone go? Of the 30+ Dinosaur/J shows I’ve seen in the last 17 years, I think this was one of the worst. Lou and Murph played with the passion that you’d expect, but J seemed even less interested than you’d expect.

Debated about getting there for the support (Carsick Cars) after the hands down worst band I’ve ever seen (Jennifer Gentle) supporting Sebadoh last week, but decided to give them a go, and they didn’t disappoint. Heavy shades of Pavement were a delight to hear. Made me really wish for a Don’t Look Back Pavement Slanted & Enchanted tour. A man can dream.

Anyway, i really wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last we see of the old line-up in England (can’t face the ATP thing). I’m not sure the crowd helped either, asides from Freakscene the biggest cheers were reserved for Feel the Pain and the stuff from Beyond.

Seriously considered whether I’m just too old for it, but at 33 I’m hardly a dinosaur, still love the band, and really enjoyed Sebadoh last week. Massively underwhelmed by last night, but I wonder if they’ve just overtoured and are going through the motions. Did seem like it last night.

Will I go again? Definitely, if they play again. But perhaps my days of following them like a stalker around Europe have passed. Next stop Pitchfork in Chicago. At least I’ll see Lou twice.

I had a similar reaction to the first of last year’s two Irving Plaza shows. Murph was great, but J and Lou seemed to be just going through the motions, and the whole thing struck me as depressingly dull. (Others on here very much disagreed with me, though). The next night they were back on form, and the last time I saw them (Wiltern, L.A.) was really good too.

I do think they’re "toured out." The novelty has worn off, the setlists have been very predictable since Beyond was released, and I think they’re playing out the festival circuit this year to have one last go at some decent money. It’s telling that they haven’t yet announced any US tour dates aside from the two festival dates. Unless they pick up some sponsorship like they did last summer with the Camel deal, I doubt we’ll see them doing club dates again Stateside. I hope I’m wrong, as I’d love to see them a few more times, but we’ll see. Actually, what I’d really like to see is the Schools/Spence Fog so we can hear all the great J material that’s been sidelined during the Dino reunion.

          wow … that’s such a weird reaction …

I thought this was a really good show and a lot better than the last one I went to — and I was really glad I went!

I thought the first third of the set was OK, but after that I thought it really picked up in intensity… and the people around us were singing along and there were LOADS of young boys FULL of testosterone getting REALLY into it around us as well…. The only distracting thing was Murph’s ongoing drum problem, but that was eventually sorted out …

Anyhow … I agree the opening band was awesome … I thought they were called Origami, so I’m glad you cleared that up !!

here’s the correct set list from the show at Koko ….

            Tarpit
            Been There All The Time
            The Lung
            Lightning Bulb
            Budge
            Crumble
            Pick Me Up
            Feel The Pain
            Out There
            Raisans
            Freak Scene
            Gargoyle

            The Wagon
            Mountain Man

I thought it was another great show but I wish they’d play some more tracks from Bug :?

Awesome… thanks for that Darren …

My husband was asking about the names of some of the songs and I was like, I don’t know! :D

Gosh, Murph has a drum problem. Yikes…….sending prayers his way.

Tubby, the last time I saw Dave he was getting ready to move to LA.
Actually, the real last time I saw Dave he was making a turn from Prince Ave onto Milledge, in front of the Duncan Donuts and bless his heart he was having a lot of trouble doing it. Kyle is still in Athens, as of a few weeks ago, so that just seems like it’s never gonna happen.

I liked the way they sounded in Athens but thought the set up of the Amps was kind of funny……..seems like one could stretch some yellow police tape around J, and tape some no trespassing signs to complete the look.

Gosh, it’s been a long time since I’ve just BS’d on Freakscene, well everything I’ve said is the truth as far as I could interpret it, you know how that is….relative, I suppose.

But it’s good to see you around again … :D

Oh, I think everything I wrote is pretty clear except perhaps the drum problem. Uhh, I was the only one laughing in my head, I suppose, you know, it’s not funny, but drum problem is like one letter removed from being another problem that……. Oh, nevermind. There is a little band here in town for children called the "Sunny Side Up Band" the drummer is the father of my oldest son and daughter best friend, I was just laughing out loud thinking, you know "drum problem" that’s something no one wants to have. Do they even have a 12 step program for that? Without missing a beat, I might say, that some drummers have a reputation for going wingnuts, I should take the high hat road and not give them a bad rack but that’s okay, most of them have a thick skin anyway. I think many folks, not only drummers have been caught in the snare of problematic and repetitive midnight gong hits. I know I should be the first to take a stand against obtuse writing on freakscene but it’s really just a cymbal of the times I live in.
Good to see you to Rambleon, I love how you have been rocking that snowman for years now. Please feel free to come to Athens for a visit. I wont be traveling overseas anytime soon. My husband and I now spend about 800 dollars for gasoline each month.

Actually the ‘drum’ problem was the bit I did get – and I thought that as I wrote it, and wondered if anyone else would think that too — and you did, so there you go!

It was the police tape bit that lost me … :?: :D but anyhow …

                          800 dollars … wah! that’s crazy…

Well, I haven’t been in a USA mood for a few years now … the last time I went home in 2004 we visted MD, NYC and Vermont around Xmas time and it was FREEZING — it was just SOOO cold it made me grumpy!

So this year we’re probably going back to Spain (Madrid, Cordoba … maybe Granada) …

But the next time I’m in your neck of the woods I’d love to drop by … 8)

I know exactly what Stefka’s talking about. J’s in his corner, Lou’s in his, Murph’s in the middle. Lou and Murph interact on stage, but J’s totally in his own space. They’re a lean, mean, tight machine of a band, but not really an interactive one.

This contrasts greatly with the Schools/Spence Fog. Check the Boston dvd — J interacts with those guys, both musically and personally, through the whole gig. There’s lots of musical interaction and interactive improvisation (as compared with Dino, where J improvises a lot in his solos with Lou and Murph as background). J’s a lot more open when he plays with them, and almost totally self-enclosed with Dino. Two totally different vibes.

Oh, that’s funny….that’s the part you did get. Yes, what Tubby said, that’s what I mean. Thanks Vaguely Dismember for the cow bell, I love it! Juan and I go the natural route with the kids so we don’t have "plastic" toys in the house. I hate plastic toys or anything with batteries, but we have a huge cow bell, that has been a favorite toy of all of my children for years.

Yes, every time I post something I have to log back in , real pain. In fact, Tubby told me something that he does and that is copy and paste. So now I’m about to copy and paste this whole post before I hit submit because I’m gonna have to log back in to post it.
