Sg, what are so many sax players named Sonny? We even have one here in Athens. Yeah, that Sax solo in
the Buddy Rich video, is great……………………………… (although, I don’t know who it is…………some other Sonny, I guess,
)It`s not just sax players are called Sonny.Sonny Sharrock played guitar for example and Sonny Clark played piano.Maybe I`ll do a Sonnys mix in the My Mix section someday.
My guess on the sax player in the Rich vid was Don Menza or Pete Christlieb(Tom Waits fans will know Christlieb`s work on the Nighthawks At The Diner album)May 23, 2006 at 3:22 pm #71904The first swearing on a worldwide number one record!
Listen to Hey Jude / Beatles. at 2.58 – 3:00 While Paul is singing, you can hear John shouting "fucking hell", after breaking a string! They try to hide it, muted it a bit, but listen to it, you’ll recognize it.
Okay not magical but still…….

Ah yes, my calculations show there are exactly 2,458,964 magic Beatles moments. I really shouldn’t get started on the Beatles but, a couple of my personal favorites:
Happinesss is a Warm Gun: George Martin brought up a track too quickly. Originally, John sang the "I need a fix" line twice, but the first was supposed to be left out in the release. The end of the first "down," though, ended up on the master.
Rain: This was the first song to use a tape played backwards, which created the strange audio effect. John Lennon discovered the technique when he put the tape for "Tomorrow Never Knows" on the wrong way. He was stoned at the time, and producer George Martin had to convince him that using a backward recording for the entire song was a bad idea.
May 24, 2006 at 2:30 pm #71907Recorded: John Coltrane: India. Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um. Duke Ellington: The Great Paris Concert. Bill Evans: You Must Believe in Spring. Alberta Hunter, Victoria Spivey & Lucille Hegimen: Songs We Taught Your Mother. Big Joe Williams: Piney Woods Blues. Mary Lou Williams: Dirge Blues. Fushitsusha: Fushitsusha. Sonic Youth: various. and the rest: always on tap.

………………………………..Someone on another site pointed this out to me.I did`nt think there was any Last Exit vid footage so I was very happy to see it!They are no longer a band since the death of guitarist Sonny Sharrock around that time of that video. He was like the missing link between Coltrane and Sonic Youth. One of my favorite guitar players for sure.Peter Brotzmann is the saxman.Bill Clinton once called him the greatest saxophonist in the world. His 1968 album Machine Gun is one of the most extreme noise jazz albums there is.Ronald Shannon Jackson is the drummer,a veteran of many noisy jazz bands of Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler.I did`nt see Bill Laswell on bass, the guy King Tubby was talking about earlier in this thread.A master producer/bassist who`s worked with Iggy Pop to Motorhead to Herbie Hancock to who knows who else.
May 25, 2006 at 11:07 am #71913I was supposed to see Sonny Sharrock in New Haven, CT right around the time the fantastic Laswell-produced Ask the Ages album came out, but he got stuck in a terrible traffic jam on I-95 and never made it. A few months later, he was dead of a heart attack. Not long after, Miles’ old drummer Tony Williams died terribly young of a heart attack, just after finishing the Arcana: Arc of the Testimony album with Laswell. Maybe somebody should prevent Laswell from working with these venerable jazz guys so we can keep them around…..though Pharoah Sanders is still kicking after recording regularly with Laswell. He’s about due for a new record, no?

He’s about due for a new record, no?Some years ago I heard an interview with a guy who was working on a movie around here.He talked about his involvement in the jazz scene of the `60s.Get this:he was Larry Young`s manager and later the manager for the Tony Williams Lifetime! They asked him what he thought of Sharrock`s Ask The Ages which was the buzz at the time.He said he`s been there before

Speaking of Sanders, there`s this album by a drummer from Montreal named Franklin Kiermeyer or something called Solomon`s Daughter from 1994 or so.Anyway,Pharoah Sanders goes out of his mind on this album!
Did`nt Whitney Houston work with Laswell on one of the Material albums?Yes,that `s right Whitney
May 25, 2006 at 12:37 pm #71915What is the name of Sonny Sharrock’s son? Also, this brings back good memories: http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/102005/watn2.html

What a great time for the Montreal music scene.

I think you`re thinking of Sonny Greenwich.Sharrock is from New York state.I forget Greenwich`s son`s name but he played in the band Bootsauce. There`s a story about Coltrane hearing Sonny Greenwich and being so impressed asked him to join his band!
Greenwich turned him down
,I guess wanting to stay in Montreal. But yeah Greenwich is a superb guitarist though uses less distortion than Sharrock

Don’t worry, for the Beatles I’ll take the karma hit. People need to understand the significance. There never was, nor will there ever be anyone that can match the musical contributions of the greatest band in history. A few more gems….
A Day in the Life: After the final note, Lennon had producer George Martin dub in a high pitched tone, which most humans can’t hear, but drives dogs crazy.
Back in the USSR: This opens with the sound of an airplane flying from left to right across the speakers. Stereo was relatively new, so this was very innovative for the time.
I Feel Fine: The first note was the first time feedback was used on a record. It was created when Paul McCartney pushed his bass up against an amplifier.
Sun King: The Beatles got the idea to use reverb on this after hearing Fleetwood Mac’s "Albatross."
We Can Work it Out: A promotional film was made to support this song. It was one of the first music videos.
Yer Blues: A 9 minute version with Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell was performed on the Rolling Stones’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus. Taped as a British TV special in 1968, it never aired but was released on video in 1995. This was Lennon’s first performance without The Beatles.
You’ve Got tO Hide You’re Love Away: This was the first gay rock song, a message to Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who was gay.
Oh yeah, they pretty much poineered eight track recording, double tracking, and variable speed recording, too. Other than that, they’re just another band from Liverpool….
