We all know that J. is a fan of metal and of hardcore. My question is, does anyone know if J. likes the new generation of hardcore/metal/metalcore? There are a LOT of these types of bands coming from J.’s general area (Springfield specifically… which is about 20-30 miles away from him I believe)… bands such as Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, All That Remains, Unearth, and The Acacia Strain. They are all doing very well commercially.

So, anyone have an answer to this?

Probably not….those bands are a lot different from bands like Septic Death, Die Kreuzen, SSD, Venom, & Black Flag. But who knows….I have no faith in a lot of the so called metal acts around these days, they all sound the same and none of them really stand out. Whatever ask him next time you see Dinosaur or the Fog, he usually is walking around amongst the crowd! Good Luck

Yeah, I’d say probably not as well. There’s a rawness and genuine sonic chaos to Discharge, Blitz, GBH, Chaos UK, Disorder, etc., etc. that, from what he’s said in interviews, really inspired J. For whatever reasons (and there are several, I think) contemporary hardcore/thrash/whatever has lost those qualities. During the radio interview with the band a couple weeks back, where they played what they wanted to hear, the only time J really perked up and talked a lot was when the DJ asked him about why he chose to play Discharge on the show. It’s a gut-level thing with music from that era.

My general inclination is to say that J probably doesn’t as well… I don’t hear the same sonic qualities in old hardcore/metal versus new… though the new IS heavily inspired by the old stuff, it’s just pretty different. I personally like a few of these new bands, particularly Killswitch, but that’s just me. Of course, I just can’t picture J ever going for a drive down to Springfield to catch an underground show at the Fat Cats ( where many of these shows occured), or driving to Worcester for the New England Hardcore and Metal Festival. Just doesn’t seem like him… BUT he has surprised me on many occasions, so who knows. But again I’d say no as well. I’d be interested in hearing what he has to say about these new bands though, since many of them are from his (general) area after all.

One tie in: Mark Swaeber (sp?), a local musican and music shop owner who opened for Lou Barlow at the Iron Horse in Northampton, was wearing a Killswitch Engage shirt, and (I believe) collaborated with the guitarist of Killswitch on something. Mark has a sound similar to Lou, acoustic, lo fi, etc… so if Mark does, maybe Lou does, and if Lou does, maybe J does? I know it’s stretching it, but seeing this guy with the shirt was a surprise.

On one of the Loobiecore updates Lou said that "all the new emo/metal acts sound the same. atreyu, underoath, they’re all interchangeable." Or something to that effect.

                I’d have to agree.
