Hard question, almost too hard to decide :? – many doubts!
… four great bass players, each with their very unique style :P

Without Lou Barlow, the early Dino records wouldn’t be the same, Mike Watt did a stunning job on the Fog Tours 2000 – 2002, Matt Hunter did a great job in the gigs this year, but I think, here I go with Matt Johnson. He has been so cool with Dino, fitting in there perfectly well (and his solo records – although in a completely different style – are also wonderful) :)

lou barlow is one of the greatest men to ever live, jsut watching him and j playing side by side is so amazing and the voices flow so well.. it was a fucking band made from heaven when lou was on bass. I cant watch a video without just being like "damn.." haha

dont get me wrong , mike watt and mike johnson are RIGHT up there Matt is kick ass too. But nothing will ever beat the original j, lou murph line up… and lou was defientely the most original and best dinosaur bass player ever in my opinion, i also love his voice and sebadoh rules

What about J. I probably like J’s bass playing on More Light and Free So Free more than any of them but he can’t play with himself live.

if you guys would have actually seen matt hit that thing on this last tour, you might think again about yer vote.

No doubt a difficult choice  You have Lou who was there from the beginning helped create some wicked songs & shows, Mike Johnson who also appeared on a couple discs not to mention tons of cool shows, a great Bass player, Watt…nuff said  & Matt who recently played several live shows with J…impossible to choose

I like the way J is mixing it up with the Fog, Watt, guys from Cobra Verde, Matt Hunter, always something new & thrilling.

But, I agree with Ammaringnyc

I think more than a couple of voters actually have seen the whole line up of bass players playing live with J over the years…

i hate how people hate on watt, just the fact that he was IN j mascis + the fog is fucking amazing, he rules, lou is the best dinosaur bassist ever

all the bassists are capable of playing the basslines from the albums.
It’s J songs. what bassplayer he’s got with him, is not that important as long as he plays ok. But I must say that Watt totally kicks ass. he’s doing much more improvisation than let’s say, Mike Johnson.. They’ve got a bit different playingstyles. but then again I love watching videotapes with Mike Johnson. And I aslo love seeing lou barlow.. So the conclusion is that I love dinosaur jr.

for J, it probably wasn’t the same which bass player played with him. He has got a very definitive idea about how to play his songs, with the result that he recorded much of the bass and drums on many albums on his own.

it reminds me of this interview with Mike Johnson from about 1997:

                                Quote:
How did recording it [Hand it Over] go? What was one of the toughest songs to record?

[Mike Johnson:] For me the toughest was "Nothin’s Goin’ On". J ended up having to insert this one part of the bass line because it’s a weird bass riff. I couldn’t get the rhythm because it was like an opposite rhythm of what my mind would work it in. I got it later, but for recording he had to end up doing it himself. That was the toughest for me, but it’s an incredibly easy song to play (laughs).

so I’d say, each bass player "passed the test", or they wouldn’t have been in a band with J
