A coworker asked me to make her a CD of some of the songs that I like… I’ve long decided that one CD is far too limiting, so I’ve decided to make her two: One for the more upbeat rockin’ out stuff, and one for the slower, mellow stuff, for chillin’. Here’s the rockin’ mix, the mellow one is currently a work in progress. 8)

The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic
      Eyesinweasel – Seven and Nine
      fIREHOSE – Can’t Believe
Guided By Voices – Little Lines
Hüsker Dü – Makes No Sense At All
Dinosaur Jr – Freak Scene
Frank Black – Men in Black
      Bob Mould – Sweet Serene
Minutemen – This Ain’t No Picnic
J Mascis + the Fog – Everybody Lets Me Down
      Karate – Sever
      Sonic Youth – Sugar Kane
The Dismemberment Plan – It’s So You
      Modest Mouse – Polar Opposites
Man… or Astroman? – Planet Collision
Frank Black and the Catholics – I Need Peace
      Pixies – Wave of Mutilation
Mike Watt – Song for Igor
      Sebadoh – Ocean
      Yo La Tengo – Sugarcube
      Versus – Let’s Electrify!
Songs: Ohio – I’ve Been Riding With The Ghost
      Built To Spill – Stab

            Thank you, thank you!

I’ve been a fan a ‘Man… or Astroman?’ for a long time. They used to come to my town every year, but stopped doing that after Starcrunch left, for some reason.

…and yes, there is at least one rockin’ Songs Ohia song, but probably not many more than that.

Cool mix 8) nice to see Karate in there, not too many folks mention them,I have their The Bed Is in The Ocean album which is good, the guitarist tends to do jazzy guitar solos then he hits the distortion and rocks out
Did you find Versus` Let`s Electrify ep?that`s a rare item indeed.I like Seaweed Rising the most cuz of the noisy feedback jam at the end :P

Karate is one of my favorite bands! Have you heard their two later albums, Unsolved and Some Boots? They are MUCH jazzier than their previous stuff, and very, very good!

Unfortunately, I aquired ‘Let’s Electrify’ (the song) from less RIAA-friendly methods. I have yet to find anything from the rest of the ep, but that particular song is awesome.

No,I have`nt heard those Karate albums yet but I`ll check into them.their older stuff is more rock, the recent stuff is more jazzy.Karate`s main guy Geoff Farina also plays with the Secret Stars, they did 2 albums for Shrimper records in 96 and 98.
Hopefully that Versus ep will be reissued but it seems unlikely.

I included a Karate song on a ‘pre-FS-mix-cd’ (don’t remember the title, have to dig that cd out of the vaults some time…), it was from their first album, that was not jazzy at all……

I saw them live a couple of years later, in the small upstairs hall of the Paradiso after a gig in the main hall. it was quite a disappointment, the band doing their jazz/post-rock thing and losing interest quickly as they noticed that they were not going to win the battle against the crowd who were very busy discussing that night’s other gig and trying to order drinks from the bar, the muddy sound-mix didn’t help either…. :?
