thanksDecember 22, 2002 at 1:11 pm #84636hey, found another review of the Munich show (besides the one out of the Süddeutsche Zeitung which we already know)
J Mascis – a turned grey dinosaur on tour in Germany
17. December 2002 J. Mascis in MunichThere’s nothing, really nothing, J. Mascis has unlearned since he recorded an outstanding album this year. "Free so Free" is the third solo album of the former Dinosaur-Jr.-boss after "Martin & Me" and "More Light" and the album is the most catchy and merry one so far. With this record and with his other 10000 albums in the baggage the man with the horn rimmed eyeglasses and the long, meanwhile grey-brown hair went on solo tour, and thereby he stopped in Munich on 17th December 2002 – one of the retrieving dates of the postponed November tour – in the small, half filled venue ‘Club Hansa39’ on the ‘Feierwerk’ area.
The years didn’t pass Mascis without a trace, neither the audience. No teenies there, people with the birth years from 1982 upward apparently don’t form the target group of the old Indie combatant, most of the people in the audience are between 24 and 30. However, they expected the appearance of their guitar hero with enthusiasm. Later they should see Mascis’ weirdness personally.Around 21.45 h, ‘The Man with The Guitar’ enters the small stage, where there is only a chair, a small table with Volvic water and some effect devices as well as a microphone stand. Very close to the artist. Pure authenticity. Mascis makes himself comfortable, tunes again his acoustic guitar: Then he satrts already with the guitar pecking out of ‘Free so Free’, the title track of the current album. [It was ‘Someone said’, actually, according to trensidoh’s setlist
; FC]
The people are deeply moved, the calculation seems to come out right. With one song after the other, Mascis delivers a general survey of his entire career, he plays classics like ‘Freak Scene’, ‘Feel The Pain’, ‘The Post’ and ‘The Wagon’ [check the setlist for the songs J actually played in Munich – but I know, it’s not easy to get the songs of a show, … at least the guy seems to knows some ; FC]. Of course the newer material isn’t missing like the great (and greatly played) ‘Same day’ or the "self-pity-rocksong" ‘Everybody Let’s Me down’, the hit out of the current album. But the lone wolf from Massachusetts doesn’t seem to care much about the euphoric applause. He throws his entire set to the listeners’ feet. Occasionally he’s speeding up with distortion and gniedelt [ noodles?; FC] one ingenious solo after the other out of his fingers. Although this overdrive appears out of place, Mascis nevertheless rocks the ‘Hansa39’ with his individual kind of presentation. With his verbal announcements he remains taciturnly, he just thanks the audience three or four times within the hour the played, then already the set is over. After the enthusiastic applause in the end of the show there’s only one lousy song as encore, another "thank you for coming to the show", then he leaves the stage. Loveless? Perhaps, but Mascis isn’t known at all as an Entertainer, or as a man, who charms the audience with his talk. He’s achieving that as a highly gifted guitar player and songwriter. – Lothar GerberDecember 22, 2002 at 1:18 pm #84637hEY Cloudy 1 Of Our Highly Adored Official German Translation Member
