The Kirkwood brothers are reuniting the Meat Puppets, which is great news! Bostrom’s not participating, though, which sucks, but Primus’ drummer is filling in and he’s got a weird enough, upbeat style to keep the music afloat, I’d say.

HUSKER DU was Bob’s guitar sound and songwriting. Plain and simple. Grant had an ok song here and there, but no one would remember that band if it was only Grant songs and no Bob on gee-tar. But HUSKER would still be relelvant if Grant was never in it, but Bob was. Which is why one of them still has a music career and the other doesn’t.
I feel like the BOB MOULD BAND playing HUSKER songs is as close to a reunion as I need.

I`m glad to hear the Kirkwood bros are talking to each and want to make music again.Shame about Bostrom not being involved but the Pups at the core are the Kirkwoods.

AWESOME!
April 27, 2006 at 5:50 pm #116474Thats cool, I’ll definately go.
I can’t really see Tim Alexander working within the context of that band though. Overdrumming will occur.

I feel compelled to stick up for Grant’s songs here — Diane, Pink Turns To Blue, Somewhere, Never Talking to You Again, Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill, Terms of Psychic Warfare, Books About UFOs, Green Eyes, Flexible Flyer, Keep Hanging On…..there are two more albums to go (one a double lp), and this is just a very sketchy list of his great songs from the first few records (and you have to remember that Bob laid down The Law that Grant could only contribute 40% of the songs to any Huskers album). If all the Huskers had been was Bob’s pissing and moaning songs, however great and original his guitar sound was, I don’t think as many people would’ve stuck around to listen to them. Huskers without Grant’s songs would be like the Clash without Mick Jones’ — still good, but nowhere near as great. And I kind of like Grant’s drumming for its slappiness and energy, but he really doesn’t accent the rhythms like a regular drummer. That’s what made their sound unique, though. Even Bob’s best stuff since, with much better musicians, has been by-and-large a bit sluggish and arthritic by comparison.

Bob Mould has a DVD coming out of his last band tour, think they finished all the edits etc, hopefully out soon…dvd info

And I’d hardly call it "sluggish". That thing makes me want to drive fast with the windows rolled down every time.

It’s all a matter of taste, I guess. I like Copper Blue just fine, but it sounds to my ears a bit too…..easy….or expected…..or something. Too pat, the perfect career move for Bob at that point. For all their animosity, the Huskers were a three-piece creative outfit, which lent their stuff a unique dynamism, whereas Sugar was Bob and two guys he told what to do (though they tried gamely to maintain that Sugar was a proper "band" for a while). That said, Sugar’s Beaster remains my favorite album Bob’s been involved with since Flip Your Wig. It’s full-on fuckin’ fierce from start to finish. Beautiful stuff. Seeing Sugar play that whole thing live was something else. J and Mike Johnson were at that gig (at the Roseland), because I think they had just taped a Letterman show that afternoon.

Grant`s songs were just as important as Bob`s in Husker. It`s like in Uncle Tupelo alot of fans prefer Farrar`s songs to Tweedy and I might be a bigger fan of Farrar but I can`t deny that Tweedy had some great songs with UT.

His songs were always forced and quirky sounding. And he couldn’t figure out how to sing. He just kinda talked his lyrics.
I do like BLACK EYE off the MARCH record, but nothing else of the first 3 Tupelo albums. He had a couple good ones on ANODYNE, but they still kinda felt "quirky".
I actually bet you couldn’t find one single person that likes TWEEDY’s songs more than FARRAR’s in the Tupelo days.

I feel the exact same same way about Husker Du.
Also another vote for My Bloody Valentine (Yeah, it’s a dream).
Not a reunion as such but I’d love to see J record something with Watt that had equally split songwriting credits, shared vocals, plus Hurley on board.
I’d also like New Kingdom active again.
Who else?
Gastr Del Sol.

I was just thinking of them yesterday — never much liked them, but the punk band I played in in high school opened for them in ’87, I think, when all they had out was a homemade cassette. I remember it being pretty good, but I lent it to a kid from DC when I was in college (he couldn’t believe someone from outside DC actually had a copy) and never saw it again.
They were a weird band.Craig`s vocals were like Matthew Sweet doing a Freddie Mercury impression. They went crappy towards the end but up to `94 they were incredible.People are really love em/hate `em about them it seems.
At that show there were only about 40-50 people, and like many sparsely-attended gigs, the small crowd was hanging back at a considerable distance from the stage. Craig was perturbed by this, and began shrieking, in that weird voice, "COME IN!!!!! COME IN!!!!!! COME IN!!!!!!," over and over like a kid having a tantrum.
