It says nothing about J and Watt touring. J is planning on touring with Dave Schools from Widespread panic.

April 9, 2004 at 10:41 am #100815Hey y’all…
I am personally extremely excited about the collaboration between J & Dave Schools for this project. Like I said in another forum here, Dave is an amazing bass player. Since everyone seems to be a bit clueless as to his work, besides with Widespread Panic, who has toured since the mid-80s, he has done work on tons of other projects. Brute is the band that combines Vic Chesnutt and Widespread Panic and I would venture to guess that a lot of people here would like their work. See albums "nine high a pallet" or "cobalt". GREAT records. Dave also does some really cool experimental stuff with a gig called Slang, check it out. They have a new album coming out very soon which will also include vocals by Vic Chesnutt and some other guests. http://www.slang1.com/main.html”>http://www.slang1.com/main.html Then one of my other favorite projects of Dave’s is a band called Acetate who just released their first album, it kicks ass. (3 piece, with Kevin Sweeney of some cool Athens bands called "The Sunshine Fix" and "Hayride, and with Ben Mize formerly of the Counting Crows). Anyway, hopefully that gives you a better perspective of Dave’s ability to mix it up with a variety of different acts…And he is a fan of J’s so that is the most important ingredient I think.
The drummer for this show at the 40 watt is Kyle Spence. He is a kickass drummer! Check out The Tom Collins band for more info on him and some song samples…thetomcollins.com
Basically, can you tell I’m extremely excited for this show?
As for Mike Watt, if you didn’t know, he is doing a tour with the secondmen in May so if you live in Atlanta, come check him out at the EARL on 5/13.
What a kickass month of music down here in the south!
April 9, 2004 at 11:13 am #100816Thanks for all the info on the newest members of The Fog, appreciate it

Definitely looking forward to hearing some reviews & recordings of the upcoming shows, still keeping my fingers crossed they’ll hit the midwest at some point

I agree, it’s great to know more details about the new Fog musicians. Thanks a lot, Jayne! Also I’m looking forward a lot to the recording !!!
😀
…of course it’s surprising that there will be a Fog w/o George, but probably he has other projects going on.April 13, 2004 at 8:53 pm #100818Hey I’m back, what exciting news!! I must say I do feel guilty as I take on a sort of universal sadness for all of ya’ll who are waiting to see J play, some have waited years
and here we are in Athens 3 months later. I wanted to respond to Flying Cloud and say that perhaps George is not busy with other projects, perhaps J wanted just to do something a little different. As I posted elsewhere J is going through a saturn transit and will experience the need to move on so to speak. I do love George, he has the most etherial look on his face when drumming. During the course of the night his look will move from etherial to lovable retard. When his mouth hangs open and his eyes sort of half close. Then out of nowhere a big smile comes over him as if he is on another planet having an amusing conversation with someone else while an alien has taken over and is drumming for him. Well, I will miss that. Oh, by the way J may be writing some new songs with Dave Schools, let me go find that article and I will post it.April 13, 2004 at 9:32 pm #100819This was a little piece that was found in the gossip section of the Flagpole (our local art, music and opinion paper) this was from January. The question was "What is J doing in Athens, Georgia?"
J MASCIS The inscrutable
leader of indie hero trio Dinosaur Jr. is a powerhouse in independent rock today, having influenced bands not even old enough to remember him. Mascis has worked with Bob Pollard, Mike Watt and Athens’ own Elf Power: According to sources, Mascis has spent the past few weeks here in town with Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools. The two have been writing songs and establishing their own mutual appreciation society. After Mascis performs solo expect Schools to sit in for a set.Dave did not sit in for a set but stood next to my husband and I (next to the stage) for the whole show. Dave ( a bigger guy) rescued J from feeding frenzied fans who were grabbing and pulling on him as he tried to leave the club. The Caledonia does not have a backstage area it just has a stage and you come and go through one of two doors that is used by the public. So it leaves us to guess are they WRITING songs together? This union is perfect for my husband and I. I have always been a J fan and when I met him he had no idea who J was and when he heard me play some he said "I don’t like it" He on the other hand was all about The Grateful Dead and it is really true I could not name ONE song by them. I thought the Grateful Dead was another name for the Rainbow family. Don’t ask how I missed knowing the Greatful Dead until I met my husband, I just did. When we both moved to Athens he would run into some of the Widespread guys and always introduce us (I think they had the same hemp connection also) but that is just my thinking. My husband and Dave are always hugging when they meet and they look a little alike. At J’s show in January Juan asked Dave if he had been working with J and he said something like "I have been out of town for a few weeks and just got back" So is it true that J ( as the paper said ) spent a few weeks in town? Or was it true as Jerimiah said in an earlier post that J arrived in town on the day of the 26th? leaves us alot to wonder about?

I agree, there’s something special about seeing & listening to George Berz playing the drums

I don’t have any idea about what he’s doing right now, would be interesting to hear how life is treating him!thanks a lot for the details about J & Dave Schools. great to have some info about the new songs & I’m very curious to hear more, hope there will be more details soon!
April 30, 2004 at 7:22 pm #100822Article from Flagpole magazine on the new Fog
J Mascis & The Fog, The Sunshine Fix
Wednesday, April 28, 40 Watt ClubJ Mascis has influenced bands too young to have grown up listening to the majority of his output. The steam engine behind ’80s and ’90s indie powerhouse Dinosaur Jr., Mascis has continued to perfect his cranky, Neil Young-inspired vocals and the resounding din of his guitar. When Mascis was in Athens during January’s ice storm, he was hooked up with Dave Schools (Widespread Panic, Acetate) by a manager they’d shared who thought the two would have similar interests. Kyle Spence (ex-Harvey Milk) was drumming as the Tom Collins opened Mascis’ Caledonia show and caught Mascis’ eye – no small feat, as Mascis is an exacting drummer himself. The current incarnation of Mascis’ ever-revolving backing band the Fog was solidifying.
"We were introduced," says Schools, "and we hung out to see if we had any common interests – which we did… [Acetate and Mascis] jammed in the basement on a really long version of Alice Cooper’s ’18.’ We made some noise, had some fun, and J and I decided to do some shows."
Though the possibility of Schools and Mascis collaborating in songwriting emerged, the idea has yet to be realized. "J has really never collaborated with anyone on anything," says Schools, laughing.
Mascis’ reputation of poor communication still hounds him, as he famously dismissed Lou Barlow from Dino in 1989. "We talked about it at length, and he really felt better about doing something new with the Fog, personnel-wise. So that was established, then the next step was for him to write some new songs and the three of us to play them live."
Tonight’s show is the first public performance of the trio about to set out on a brief tour, and is not to be missed. [Chris Hassiotis] -
