An interview with J in Aftenposten.

J Mascis – en luring?
J Mascis er en luring. Fredag fylte han likevel nok en gang Oslo-klubben So What til randen.Lidenskap. Aftenposten møtte den tidligere frontmannen i Dinosaur Jr. noen timer før konserten. For å prate litt om konserten, og om hans nye plate, "Free So Free". Den er, ifølge biografien som ble sendt ut sammen med platen, et tilnærmet konseptalbum om J Mascis nye lidenskap, nemlig fallskjermhopping.
-Oh no, ikke har jeg hoppet i fallskjerm, og ikke kan jeg tenke meg å gjøre det, heller, sier J Mascis.
-???
-Fyren som skrev biografien kjedet seg, og bare fant på ting. Hvorfor han gjorde det? For å ha det moro, antar jeg, sier J Mascis med en opplagt distanse til intervjuer.
-Men hvis ikke låten "Freedom" fra platen har noe med fallskjermhopping å gjøre, hva kan den handle om da?
(Lang tenkepause)
-En slags reaksjon på situasjonen i USA akkurat nå, som er ganske klaustrofobisk. Etter 11. september i fjor opplever mange at friheten gradvis blir tatt fra dem.
-"Free So Free" handler om noe av det samme?
(Nok en lang pause)
-Jeg tenker egentlig ikke på sanger på den måten. Jeg skriver dem og tenker ikke så mye på dem etterpå.
Mascis medgir at han ikke er alt for glad i intervjuer.
-Vel, det er ikke så mye å si om sangene, de er bare sanger, liksom.
I går kveld spilte han altså for fulle hus på So What, kun med gitaren som følge.
-Jeg foretrekker å spille med band. Men det koster for mye å ta med et band over fra Statene, forrige gang jeg gjorde det tapte jeg masse penger. Men jeg gjør mange show hjemme uten medmusikanter, og er blitt bedre på det. Jeg har med meg litt effekter på scenen, fuzzboks blant annet.
Men han synes det er hardere, det er mye "rom" som skal fylles opp.
Et uttrykk som trekkes frem når det er snakk om J Mascis er klassisk rock. Hva tenker han om begrepet?
-For meg handler det først og fremst om Led Zeppelin, dernest kanskje om Lynyard Skynyard. De har det liksom bestandig vært der.
-Er din gamle gruppe Dinosaur Jr. klassisk?
-Nei. Ikke hvis du definerer klassisk rock som noe som spilles mye på radio.
Er det så noen sjanser for at Dinosaur Jr. kan komme sammen for en konsert igjen?
-Interessen har vel ikke vært overveldende. Eagles fikk en million dollar pr. show for for å spille sammen igjen. Tilbudene jeg har fått har vært langt unna det, ler J Mascis.

Aftenposten met the former frontman of Dinosaur Jr a few hours before his show to talk about his newest album and the upcoming concert.
Free So Free, according to the liner notes, is almost a concept album dealing with J’s new passion, skydiving.-Oh no, I’ve never done that. And I don’t want to either.
-???
-The guy who wrote the liner notes was bored and made it up. Why? For fun I guess, Mascis says.
If skydiving isn’t the issue, then what is?
(pauses to think)
-Some kind of reaction to the current situation in the US which is pretty claustrophobic. After 9.11 last year, alot of people feel that their freedom is slowly taken away from them.
Free So Free is dealing with that?
(pauses to think)
-I really don’t think about songs in that perspective. I write them and don’t think about them afterwards.
Mascis admits that he isn’t too happy about interviews.
-Well, there’s really not that much to say about songs, they’re kinda just songs.
Last evening he played a sold out So What, with only his guitar as companion.
-I prefer to play with a band. But it costs to much money to bring a band from the states, last time I did I lost a lot of money. But I’m doing a lot of shows back home with just the guitar, and has gotten better at it. I bring some effects on the stage, fuzz among others.
But he feels it’s difficult, it’s a lot of empty room that has to be filled.
People are often mentioning classic rock when discussing Mascis, what does he think of the term?
-To me it’s mostly about Led Zeppelin, and maybe Lynyrd Skynyard follows. They’ve kinda always been there.
Is your old group Dinosaur Jr classic?
-No. Not if means that it gets a lot of airtime on the radioes.
Are there any chances of a Dinosaur Jr reunion?
-Can’t say the interest has been overwhelming. Eagles got a million dollars a show when they reunited. The offers I’ve gotten has been miles away from that, Mascis laughs.
