One of the better music documentaries I’ve seen. In that it paints a warm, yet harshly real picture of MacGowans and the Pogues rise and fall. It avoids becoming melodramatic, judgemental and/or a 110 minutes spectacle of asslicking MacGowans ego.
Nice mix as usual Salami, especially the ending.
October 21, 2003 at 1:26 pm #96711I first saw The Pogues on TV with the Dirty Old Town video around 1986 or 87,I hated them back then
celtic music is so shoved down our throats in this part of the country and the ‘celtic mafia’ as they call them control so much of the music scene around here for example even local blues musicians do celtic music on the side
but over the years there`s been more diversity in music around here than celtic music so you don`t have to hire a fiddler or bagpiper in your band anymore
Over the years though I`ve grown to love some celtic music(not Great Big Sea!
)and love The Pogues and how punk rock mixed well with trad irish folk sounds
older bands like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span mixed celtic and rock damn well

A celtic mafia?!?!? Man, I thought you were from canada, not edinburgh. So the blues joints were blackmailed and leaned on by the celts, eh? Storming the place with their bagpipes and kilts, demanding a picture of rob roy over every table and the menu to be written in gaelic. Crazy country canada. Crazy country.
October 21, 2003 at 6:30 pm #96713Nova Scotia does`nt translate into New Scotland for nothing

Some street signs in the province are written in gaelic

If we could get Mogwai or Teenage Fanclub here they`d feel right at home
