Horace Silver-Song For My Father(1964)
Silver did more records for the Bluenote label than I can count. His tunes were catchy enough to catch the ear of rock fans. This record is one of the finest albums of 1960`s jazz. The title song was reworked by Steely Dan in the `70s as Rikki Don`t Lose That Number.
August 3, 2009 at 12:43 pm #136260Charles Mingus-The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady(1963)
Mingus was one of the most eccentric and weird of jazz musicians. He wrote music that was difficult enough that his own bands could`nt play.He insisted that they did or he`d punch them in the face
At the height of his popularity he comitted himself to a mental hospital(I love his quote ‘World leaders? They`d never get out of Bellevue’
) He was very outspoken politically so much so that there were rumors concerning his death from ALS in 1979 was not ALS and that he was the victim of a CIA hit from poisoning.
He did many brilliant albums. This one is fascinating.Like walking down the streets of NYC in the early `60s in a dreamlike state.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbLHhayYxB8 dbLHhayYxB8

August 4, 2009 at 7:40 am #136261Grant Green-Idle Moments(1963)
While he did`nt become that well known in his life time,Green was a major jazz guitar pro.In the cd reissue age more folks are discovering him.His `60s recordings are mainstream jazz while his `70s stuff is more funky. This album is one of his finest with a cool band and is pretty essential to any jazz guitar collection.

August 4, 2009 at 2:25 pm #136262Pharoah Sanders-Karma(1969)
So imagine this.A group of hippies dancing in a field with tambourines and bells, hollaring the joys of peace and love and love and peace. Then suddenly an alien craft lands and starts directing strange beams of light taking the happy hippies captive!Until they show the alien beings their message. The strange little guys dig it too cuz the creator has a master plan…

August 4, 2009 at 2:56 pm #136263Annastefka, after hearing from SG what you’ve been through I understand you better
August 4, 2009 at 5:38 pm #136264I did`nt write that to offend Stefka by the way.It just sounded good to describe the album
*SG imagines turning the members of Freak Scene into jazz cats*
*imagines Girl in dark glasses and smoking cigarettes telling us all she`s now called Swinging Chick*
*imagines Robert in suit and drinking elegant wine revealing his alter ego The Slick Scandanavian*
*imagines Tonas with goatee and bongos telling us he`s called The Tacoma Daddy*
*imagines Jeremiah as the boss man,Carolina Cool*

August 6, 2009 at 8:00 am #136266Roland Kirk-We Free Kings(1962)
Kirk was seen as either a marvel or a circus act.A blind man that could play 3 horns at once and go nuts on a flute. The thing was he could really play the saxophone but the critics of the day often dismissed him as a novelty.
In the last years of his life he suffered a stroke but kept playing regardless with one hand with half his body paralyzed. It seemed nothing could stop this guy.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0WVSUW0sZU O0WVSUW0sZU
August 7, 2009 at 2:03 pm #136267You have`nt lived until you heard Slim Gaillard. He invented his own language:

August 13, 2009 at 9:00 am #136269John Coltrane-Interstellar Space(1967)
Sax/drums duets with drummer Rashied Ali who I just heard has passed away at 74 years old.Ali joined Coltrane`s band in 1965 and remained til his death in July 1967.This record was cut in March 1967,Coltrane was in alot of pain from cancer and was taking his music way past most people`s understanding.

August 13, 2009 at 11:26 am #136271Could you guys recommend any jazz artists for a total jazz novice. I have some Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker in my collection, but thats it. I love instrumental music (I’m a huge surf music fan), but I really don’t like busy jazz music. I prefer melodic/moody insto music. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys
