i have boughten a few dinosaur vhs off ebay germany 88, bizarre fest 97 and a music videos compilation tape. Only reason i paid was because nobody would trade videos with me cause i had none to offer. Im not gonna turn around and sell copies for 20 bucks though, bastards. Pixies videos are the worste i paid 25 bucks for a copy of the brixton 91 video only to find it was like 5th generation and pretty shitty. Now i only purchase if its something i dont think ill ever find again (like breeders videos or sebadoh videos)
February 18, 2004 at 7:45 am #99183Somebody´s trying to sell the Bizarre Festival 1997 video together with a 2002 Sonic Youth concert on Ebay for 49 Euros (That´s over 50 DOLLARS !!!!!)…. BOTH where filmed for German Rockpalast show on WDR TV, I willl report this to ebay, too.

February 18, 2004 at 11:26 am #99184Good plan, keep the reports flowing to ebay for any boots or cdr’s that show up. Might be a plan to contact the seller as well, let them know we are watching…
:aliensmile:February 26, 2004 at 7:54 pm #99185lol. I have been out of the game so long, I thought someone was literally selling a pair of J’s boots.
well, I’m apparently alone on this, but if someone gave me a cd I didn’t want/like, I’d probably sell it too, if none of my friends wanted it. only I’d sell it at the used record store…and I know freaksceners shop at those.
I applaud you all for worrying that J is losing money here, but unless he decides to press all his live shows and make them officially (legally) available, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to buy them from (honest, low-overhead) private sellers as they become available. this guy doesn’t sound mean, and he doesn’t sound like he is auctioning off mountains of Dino material. he sounds like he’s using eBay the same way everyone else does– turning his trash into another person’s treasure, and making a few bucks.
also, I’d advise people to think carefully before accusing private sellers of cramping an artist’s success, or of infringing on various copyrights– I know that many of you support filesharing, and the argument could be made right back at you (though I’m certainly not taking that side, as I have both purchased bootlegs and swapped files in the past).
of course, if you receive a bootleg (via any contact, free or paid) that unexpectedly turns out to be a cdr, then by all means, you deserve to raise hell.
good to see a nice hot topic on freakscene; I’ve missed you all.
take care,
rosaFebruary 26, 2004 at 8:14 pm #99186I understand what you’re saying about bootlegs, but the one I was more concerned about was the Dinosaur Evolution disc. That was a cdr made from a number of different official releases, not bootlegged live shows. J is in the process or reissuing a bunch of his early releases, also put out a best of himself on Rhino, didn’t want to see someone else benefit from J’s work! I don’t really care where the guy bought it, and if he knew it was official or not. It was a cdr, so he knew it wasn’t official but a copy of some sort. It is illegal on ebay to sell boots/illegal copies of original material. I also don’t believe any used store would purchase a cdr trying to put itself out there as a Dinosaur jr/J Mascis best of…

NOt gonna get into a huge filesharing deal right now, think we’ve talked that one to death…ie most filesharers I know buy the releases to support the artist, get exposed to many artists they would never have heard of, Indie artists like Watt have said they make most of their cash from shows so don’t have a problem with filesharing.
Nice to hear from you Rosa…
ps I’ll let someone who is much more passionate about boots answer your questions on those
February 27, 2004 at 6:30 am #99187i have to agree w/rosa on the live bootlegs … i’ve bought a few from record fairs, 2nd hand record shops + from ebay … not everyone has an amazing computer w/a high-speed connection, you know ?
but the dinosaur evolution disc which robert pointed out was out of order b/c it was a cdr w/crappy artwork + album tracks … if you want to make that for a friend as a dino sampler – then fair enough, but don’t embarass yourself by trying to sell it … that’s going a bit too far …

Nice to see you back her rosa! Hope all is good and that you’re doing fine in your part of the world
