85% of the Irish Catholics ended up in Massachusetts (I actually had to look up how to spell Massachusetts, what a bunch of interesting letters stuck together)So, thanks Ammaringnyc, I’ve made my decision, the origin of the name is Irish and lets face it everything he does musically is magically delicious.
Every other Irish Kid born in the mid-60’s was called Kevin or Patrick but not all, not all.
I guess he descended from the "Black Irish" sub-type.
February 20, 2007 at 1:47 pm #125806Sorry, I had to post before I take my Lenten sabbatical that "God please forbid anyone to take me too seriously."
I’m sure that prayer has been answered by most folks around here……………….but by Gosh, although Magically delicious that surname is NOT Irish……………………That "s" ending has a Romany flavor (Gypsy) that was probably carried down through Italy, Greece, Sardinia.
Now, I’m not joking here, I’ve been watching all of this and having fun too long.
The last name of Masci or Mascis or Masciovecchio or Mascio or Masciarelli or Mascitelli are Latin based names and a not uncommon beginning of a last name, esp. when descending from Italy or Sardinia or you know around there.
The origin or etymology of that prefix in a sur name actually comes from the Old latin word for Mastro (master, a very good craftsman) if you go to Italy………and of course other places but especially Italy and the surrounding areas you will find this prefix. Don’t just take my word for it……….investigate it for yourself……..have some fun.
I believe the "s" on the ending is Romany (otherwise known as the original Black Irish
)………that’s just a womans intuition combined with some background.I think the correct spelling of Romany is Romani………the traveling descendants of Roma.

And it fits. J is certainly a Maestro.
February 22, 2007 at 11:47 am #125808Taken from Ancestry.com: "All the Mascis’s came from Rodi, Foggia, Italy. The story goes…. my side of the Mascis family was disowned by, I’m guessing, your side because the Mascis family was a wealthy family in Italy and the ancestor on my side married a maid and was disowned by the family. I guess he started his own family and here I am today… http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.mascis/1.2.2/mb.ashx.."
February 23, 2007 at 1:23 pm #125809i remember reading that one of J’s ancestors was a pope … and if i’m not mistaken, until somewhat recently all the popes were italian …
May 19, 2007 at 9:00 pm #125810Makes since then, but I was always interested in this, because I remember looking at a picture recently of J, and he looked a lot like a pissed off Native American.
