Westerberg put a screwdriver through his hand while trying to clean wax out of a candle about six months ago, and his doctor told him he wouldn’t be able to play guitar again for nearly a year. Methinks old Paul has taken to the bottle again. Actually, I know he has, from reports I’ve read of shows on his last tour. I wish the Replacements would tour again, as Westerberg’s solo stuff has been pretty dull. He always said that Tommy was the balls of the band, and Paul’s post-‘Mats albums have shown just how true that statement was.

Oh yeah, and Rhino are reissuing the Replacements stuff in remastered deluxe editions this fall. Maybe if Tommy’s not still tied down to that farcical version of G-n-R they’ll make a go of it on the road to promote the remasters. One can only hope……

I never got into the replacements. Not sure why they always seemed a little too Americana for me. Maybe thats a bad description but they just never did anything for me. Other bands that I do like that I think are similar are Buffalo Tom, well thats really it. I could be way off to lumping those two bands in comparison like that. I always associate the replacements with Soul Assylum, I don’t know why but I don’t like them either. :-

The `Mats are kinda of a love em/hate em band. Some folks would say they were just reved up Springsteen or something. The early stuff was more punky than the later ‘mature’ stuff.I think Tim is one of the best albums of the `80s;Paul`s slacker vocals seem to sound good to me plus they came up with some good tunes.
Buffalo Tom I like alot too.I know some did`nt care for some of their later stuff and that`s understandable cuz it`s more slicked up compared to the stuff J produced for them.
Soul Asylum I never cared much for.Pirner`s vocals are about as annoying as Billy Corgan.

I’ve only heard their Tim album. I bought it on cassette probably in 1990 (and no one told me to). He had a twin son down this way. He may have been involved in that spermatic engineering too…….

Get Pleased To Meet Me when it’s reissued. It’s the follow-up to Tim and easily its equal (to my ears it’s a little better). Don’t listen to people who go on and on about how their indie label stuff was better — that’s hogwash. Like the Screaming Trees, their records got markedly better when they made the jump to the majors. After Pleased To Meet Me, though, the last two Replacements albums were pretty forgetable, unfortunately.

Actually, for a good primer, their 2cd best-of from their Sire Records years, All for Nothing…., can be had for pretty cheap at amazon used or half.com. The second disc is all rareties and outtakes, some really good, some amusingly bad — kind of like the Replacements themselves.

I have a couple of albums. All Shook Down and Don’t Tell a Soul. I really, really, really like All Shook Down. This album, I think, is two decades old. Jeanette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde and The Heads sings on it, too. When I saw The Replacements in concert, it was the most disappointing show I have ever seen. The singing was off. To me, there was a bad vibe. But I’d go see them again, maybe it would be better this time.

Those are actually the two albums I dissed in my earlier post. To me, the ‘Mats were a kick-ass rock-and-roll band with a melancholic side. All Shook Down dispensed with the rock-n-roll in favor of the melancholy, and was basically a Westerberg solo album, which was really disappointing to me (it came out in ’90-’91, by the way). I saw them on that tour and they were incredible, though, playing stuff from Sorry Ma….. all the way through All Shook Down, and the songs from the latter were really juiced-up live with real rock-and-roll energy. They were always an unreliable live act, however, so I’m not surprised you caught a bad show. By that point they were all fed up with the band, and when Westerberg gets petulant he’ll put on a bad show just to spite the people who showed up. He’s a jerk like that, and was still pulling that shit on his last tour a couple of years ago.

Yeah, I can’t really pass judgment because I don’t have Tim or any others. I know about All Shook Down being somewhat the breaking point but I still listen to this album and enjoy it today–I don’t feel it’s dated. I find every song extremely well written.

"Let it Be" is perhaps the Replacements’ finest moment ("Tim" is a close second). Westerberg has released some fucking great records lately . . . for example: the double album "Stereo/Mono" rules — the "Mono" disc is Westerberg’s alterego "Grandpaboy," and its really stripped down, raw rock recorded on a four track in his living room. "Come Feel Me Tremble" is also great, and that came out a few years back. "Folker" is okay, and I really don’t like the stuff he did for "Open Season." Anyhow, Paul Westerberg rules.
