Does anyone know the story behind the cover photo on Green Mind? Any theories? I’ve always found it intriguing. The photo is filled with strange juxtapositions. It could be a young child, but the kid has such a serious expression and dangles the cigarette with ease. The subject is androgynous; I’ve never been able to convince myself whether it is a girl or boy.
there’s a lot of theories behind it, but all i have to say that its one of my favourite album covers ever.

Thanks for your email and compliments on the photo of "Priscilla"!I’m not sure where you can get the t-shirt, but one of my students bought one for me in the Village years ago. I’m not sure where.
The girl in the photo is a mystery and will ever remain so. One day as I was photographing at Jones Beach I saw "Priscilla" in front of me and my immediate reaction was to make a photo(s) before the moment changed. I
took a few photos, looked down to rewind the film, and put in another roll.
When I looked up she was gone! …but I had the photo and it is my most sought after image.I hope this helps. I know it is not much but that’s what happened.

I was walking through the Lanes area of Brighton (UK) recently. Down the small cobbled lane thats
Kensington Gardens there is an Art Gallery/Shop. They were having a small exhibition and sale of Joe Szabos work. Hanging in the window was a HUGE print of ‘Priscilla’. I popped in and had a chat with the galleries owner and asked how much the print was. If I remember correctly the price tag was over £1000…..!! AMAZING image though. Didn’t Sonic Youth (or Kim in particular) suggest the image as an album cover to J/the band? Due to the girl looking a bit like J? I seem to remember hearing/reading that story somewhere. I had the T-shirt too… I still do actually but it’s WAY too small for me how and full of holes. Wish I could get a new one.

Definitely a girl, eh? I’d always gone with the ‘younger, slightly feminine version of J as a boy’ kinda theory thingie…

[img]http://www.gittermangallery.com/publish/worksimages/1465web_LG.jpg[/img]i used to live in northern california and we had this big natural jetty on the harbor where the carnies and homeless folk built a shantytown city… this picture reminds me of that place. they had to bring in the national guard to move everyone out.. you really have to think about carnies that let their kids smoke ciggerettes… id smack a kid that young upside their head for smoking. smoking baad… waste of money.
