Hello, I came across J’s stolen gear and that’s very sad to hear. I always wanted a Jazzmaster but couldn’t imagine such funky finish were around.
I searched 15 pages of search results on this forum but could not find any pics of J’s purple sparkle and orange Jazzmaster guitars. do any of you could handle me such (good quality) pics of these guitars ?
were they specially refinished ? because to my knowledge, vintage Jazzmaster in such colors don’t exist

      thanks a lot.

some of J’s jazzy’s were refinished.
Look around on http://www.YouTube.com for some videos. I know there is a video with J playing the Orange Jazzy live…..I dont remember what song though.
The purple Jazzy was his prototype that Fender made for him. I first read that he had an orange Jazzy and thought the lighting made someone think that a Fiesta Red Jazzy was orange or something…..eh.

I dont know where to find pics of his prototype Jazzy though.

hey ! thanks for the tips. the colors are misleading though. the amma guitar could indeed be mistaken for a red fiesta instead of real orange…
same for the supposidly purple guitar on the video, doesn’t it look rather blueish ? I agree that with lightning the headstock seem to mimic some purple but hum, is doesn’t look as purpleish as his Mosrite prototype right ?

from the gear stolen list, he seemed to own 3 different Jazzmaster in purple sparkle. aren’t there more pictures of each puppies out there ?

thanks a lot for the replys
            cheers

I didn’t actually think he had that many purple ones. I know he had a lot of blue ones, the ones pictured from the ’97 Maximum guitar (or which ever) had all blue guitars…..one being dark blue metallic with gold guard, a Lake Placid Blue one with matching headstock and a white guard (hhmmmm) and another dark blue one with a tortoise guard. The dark blue one with the gold guard was a ’59 too……J even said in the mag that they were all blue. ???

Either way, gone now. Sorry to hear it.

I dont think anyone is going to be dumb enough to post these Jazzy’s on Ebay. IF they were stolen to sell, then they were probably done locally or stripped somewhat (stickers) and sold in pieces. If I were going to steal someones famous guitars….they would hang on my wall and I would play the devil out of them……and hope the original owner didnt ever show up…..rriiiight.

As far as I can remember J Mascis has used the following jazzmasters:
1: a sunburst full of stickers. the paint was rather vaned off. I think it is in some rock museum now? maybe this is what was used in the amherst 85 video before adding stickers?
2: the blue/purple one with black pickups, and some stickers.
3:the dark blue one with gold pickguard.
4: lake placid blue with matching headstock. ( not used as often as number 2 and 3.)
and recently a pink/red jazzmaster ( used on mountain man at the Download festival 2005) is this the Amma guitar?
and then more recently a purple/pink sparkle coloured one with gold pickguard..

from Where you been to J and the fog w/Mike Watt ; 93 to 2002:
fender telecaster (blue paint with metallic pickguard)
fender esquire ( grey sparkle paint)

plus a fender jaguar (lake placid blue w/matching headstock) not seen it used live.. ?

hehehehe…this sure is a fun disscusion (seriously) but it’s also kind of wierd because were apparently missing the point. The point isnt what the h$ll color the guitars are, they were stolen. har har.

Yeah…J’s first Jazzy when he got it, had no paint on it, then was finished to the sunburst I believe…and yes it is indeed in a museum. It kind of sucks though, that was his first guitar ever (I think) …. (bought from Slimey Bob’s guitar rip off) and now he never even see’s it. I still have my first guitar…..but I can see not wanting to play a sunburst Jazzy after all of the friggin stereotypes thrown at you for doing so. I like the fact that my Mustang is sunburst, but ever Kurt played a sunburst ’74 Mustang at one point…but I think that’s it. The sunburst mustang wasn’t made famous by Kurt though….I wouldnt like it too much if it were Sonic Blue or the LPB w/stripes…."You’re just trying to be Kurt." I hear that enough already.
