I’ve heard the rumors about the men on the Penn plane. If its true, I definitely consider them heroes.
I hear ya about the NATO thing. I do hope that this is all carried out in a cool-headed fashion.
I’ll tell you though, I haven’t looked too deeply into this, but Isreal is a concern of mine. They stand to gain considerably from all of this if they play their cards right. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start trying to manipulate things…
NBC REPORTS 5 SURVIVERS FOUND IN THE WTC WRECKAGE!!!!!!!
(Trying to find confirmation… I’ll report back later.)September 13, 2001 at 9:47 am #71593I believe the report is for real, and that "Afghanistan" is going to offer him up to try to save their skin. I believe that may have been planned from the beginning…..Bin Laden’s own suicide mission if you will. There are also reports that Iraq has been the major financial backer of the operation. Personally, I hope that when Bin Laden is handed over, we then tell Afghanistan and Iraq (provided we know that they were behind Bin Laden) that they have 24 hours to evacuate citizens from major locations…..then retaliate in a way just short of utilizing nuclear weapons.
I truly don’t believe that many folks realize the devastation and trauma that’s been afflicted. I know I hadn’t until I started hearing stories of survivors and recounts of phone conversations. Can you imagine your husband, wife, son, daughter, father or mother calling to say, "we’re going to die….take care of _________. I love you. Bye." Chilling.
Mattman….I know many people are wondering why the WTC planes didn’t have passengers that attempted to thwart the hijacking, but I firmly believe that those people were led to believe that they were in no imminent danger. The folks on the PA plane that called relatives knew about the WTC planes. The folks on the WTC planes knew nothing. The only solace that can be taken is that the ending was probably very quick. The same can’t be said about the people inside the WTC.
There was a firefighter on FOX’s Bill O’ Rielley that stated he was in Vietnam for four years, ground troops, and it didn’t hold a candle to what he’d seen the last two days. That folks, is devestation.
I, personally, think that Bush has handled himself extremely well during this time, and i’m very encouraged by the upper brass in his administration (let me qualify that statement by saying i’m very politically conservative, having voted for Harry Brown for President, but very am very pleased with Bush even though I think he’s compromised to much re: spending). I appreciate that he’s not constantly on the TV trying to show the world how this is affecting him personally, or trying to be national psychologist. His main assett is his ability to work with people who aren’t ideologically similar…and the acts of solidarity between the two parties these past couple of days has, to me, been encouraging. Even i’m not so cynical I believe it’s all for show. GWB, I believe, will take very precise steps, and not fly off the handle in some "texas cowboy" mentallity as so many people seem to think he’ll do. Make no mistake, he’s not the stupid, babbling idiot that his adversaries make him out to be. I’ve got full confidence in him, General Powell, Condelezza Rice, Dick Cheney and Sec. Rumsfeld.
We, as a nation, will be stronger for this….i’m very encouraged by how our great citizens have reacted to this tragedy. No looting. No capitalizing on the chaos. The outpouring of support from all over the globe and the refusal of the American people to back down or live in fear.
Wow….what a ramble. And I haven’t even had my mornin’ cup a joe.

September 13, 2001 at 12:17 pm #71594some words from Thurston Moore…. (thanks Ryan)
To Everyone around the world – relatives, friends and acquaintances, contacting me for personal info, this is it right now — thanks for your concern. It’s a sad day.Coco and I are here in Mass. — we drove up last Sunday night.
Kim was, and still is, in our apartment in Lower Manhattan. We’ve talked a couple of times, once right after the 1st report of trouble, and then later in the late afternoon, but phone contact is near impossible. She was there
preparing to fly to Paris this evening for a concert (which obviously did not transpire). Hopefully she can get a train out of NYC so I can go pick her up either in Springfield, MA or somewhere in CT.…
Jim O’Rourke was sleeping in our studio, 3 blocks from the Twin Towers, and ran through a flurry of of dust in pitch blackness also to our apartment (I imagine our studio is pretty much wasted). As of yet nobody I know personally has been hurt or lost. I’ve received
emails from a few friends who eyewitnessed the jets crashing into the towers and all its subsequent chaos – it is really beyond comprehension.Whatever gigs were happening involving myself this week I’m cancelling.
Coco’s a bit freaked and I’m staying here with her.Peace,
thurston

My point was one of what I believe should have and now needs to happen. If we as a nation hadn’t become complacent against our would be attackers, muggers, kidnappers, etc. these things would’ve been a lot more difficult for the terrorists. We need to start putting up a fight when our freedom is challenged. 300 million people remaining vigilant is hard to fight or threaten.
Jeremiah, damn! That was a close call, we almost lost part of Sonic Youth!!
Confirmed: There were 5 survivors pulled from the WTC rubble yesterday. 3 were police officers… That’s 5 more who can go home to their families.

September 13, 2001 at 10:15 pm #71604I think I found a direction on the John Winthrop post a few pages back that fits at this point. Mattman, you talked about how we were hit due to our own complacency. If a nation, a people, become complacent or, shall I say, secure, or even comfortable, for that matter, would they do so because they feel they have the right to feel that way? What gives us the right? Why should we have the right to feel that way more than any other nation?
I think we are the greatest people on the face of this earth and that is only because I grew up here, lived here my whole live, served to protect its interests, and am currently benefiting from doing
so via my tuition. That is solely a view I can take in correlation to the experiences I have. The view cannot be taken and thrust upon anyone else as "gospel" or mandate. I must continue to be open-minded and respectful of all people, regardless of their criteria, experiences and views. The "city on a hill" is more visible, and thus more likely to cause others to feel it is out of reach and off limits. When that occurs, resentment kindles, followed by animallike, instinctive action. In short, attitude—>behavior—> consequence. So far, none of us are sure what is soon to transpire as a result of this cycle played out on a national scale. All I know is that for me to be of any use to anyone else in this time of need, I have to do what I need to do to keep my thoughts and actions in harmony and then project that to my fellows, doing nothing more
than the next right thing, if that is all I can do.Mattman, I agree with you by the way. You just gave me a good launching pad is all. Nothing more.
September 13, 2001 at 10:24 pm #716051 question for all my american freakscene buddy’s, Is there any chance that the US have brought this tradgic situation on themselfs.
Just asking cause alot of people I talk to about this situation keep on saying that if the US would keep there noses out of every 1’s business taht this might not of happened to them.
P.S:also I’m not being a smartass when asking this ? so please just state your opinion so I can answer properly next time this topic is discussed.
Also I would like to send my simpathy’s to all the people affected by this Fucked up attack!
later trav September 13, 2001 at 11:02 pm #71606AP, in a way, yes, in a way, no.
Are they mad at US policy? Sure. Are we a buttinski as a country goes? Yes. Is the proper recourse this? No.
If Afghanistan runs to us when Russia attacks, they have to fall in line with our ideology when we help them. Duh.
