i love hand it over, very amazing album. inside and out if ya ask me. "alone" is the only song i dont like.. never got why J kept playing that one and not some of the others. i know lots of you forumers are fans but i just think its boring.. 3 chords.. never ending solos.. high pitch lyrics that i was never fond of. i do like some of j’s high pitch vocal songs.. but alone man.. just dont dig it.
i have a video from 97 where they played "loaded" and i believe its the only live version ive ever/seen heard. awesome song.
Without a Sound is wierd. I listened to it a couple of times a few weekends ago.
It was mentioned all the songs were in the same key, but it didn’t seem that way to me. When I used to play them in my room I remember having to capo on 3 or 4 songs. It is very monotone, without expression, only deviating into melody in a number of areas on the cd. Rumoredly, it was a snow husking trip in a cold place that made J sick. I hope he didn’t get MPO. All the songs on without a sound are cool.If you’re going on a quest for Dinosaur Jr., you had better get it Hand It Over. I’d like to hear the live version of Loaded. Alone is a great song to me, Kracked873, although in parts of the solo it makes me think republicans are taking over the country. Oh, I see, Bush.
What other bands used a distorted bass that was kind stand-out-ish like the one on Quest? All I can think of is the music to Black Sabbath’s Born Again…It was the only way I could play my bass, because the strings fretted better when sharp and distorted.
kracked, I’d love to see the live video of Loaded. I like that song. And I also like Alone, though I think songs like Don’t and Turnip Farm are better.
Most Dinosaur Jr songs with Lou used a distorted bass.. Let It Ride anyone?

I barely even hear the bass in the mixes on these cassettes/cds. It is way too low. I can hear the bass lines really well from a band like the cure, but I "HEAR" their music is way different.

I agree with Kracked, I don’t like alone but the rest of Hand it over is really really cool, its my 2nd/3rd favorite because i can’t choose between that or where you been. I love lou’s distorted bass. But my god do i love Let It Ride. Most people love bug but i really only like a few choice songs from it. But Let It Ride is my favorite from the album. That bassline, the melody and everything i really love. That song is awsome beyond words.

When I think of it I just usually think of freak scene and they always come. These songs have just rested in my subconscious for so long. I love that guitar piece in the post, during the chorus part, but I have to say budge and Don’t are my least faves off Bug.
Let It Ride is awesome. I love those sustained vocals during the break, the female vocals that sound like they might be combined with a guitar. Sounds like they’re at a doctor’s checkpoint.
Hand it Over is great.
And I love Alone. The whole first half of the album (up until alone) is fantastic. Then I Know Yer Insane. The rest is pretty good too, though.I do too. I mean, Bug isn’t a bad album by any means, but comparing it to Dinosaur or YLAOM is just plain silly.
The problem with Bug is that the quality is dropped. Compare songs like Tarpit and Bulbs of Passion to Yeah We Know. In addition, even though they aren’t bad songs, Budge and Pond Song are my two least favorite JLouMurph Dinosaur Jr songs. Why people love Budge amazes me.
But Let It Ride is probably my favorite. I also love No Bones. And of course you have to love Freakscene. And I think The Post is one of the most underrated Dinosaur Jr songs.

i dunno i just dont get alone at all, doesnt appeal to me at all. i dont see how anyone could dislike anything from the first three albums but like alone.. its the only dinosaur jr song (other than some without a sound tracks) that i skip when listening to an album.
but when i listen to without a sound i ussually dont make it passed the 3rd track or so.
It’s hard to find Hand It Over in a record store nowadays. For something to disappear that’s so good, it’s not good. I guess some people might think "Alone" is the whiniest tune ever to be, but it’s more like a desperate plea than anything else. I can just imagine housewives listening to it while their husbands are at work, and thinking "He didn’t take out the trash like he said he would".
Bug is way better than Dinosaur, in my opinion. I can’t imagine either, how some people think Without a Sound is the best album. I think some like it because of what they were going thru at the time. Aparrently, after without a sound not many new fans came back out to buy Hand It Over. I found it at small local seller at the time, and when I played it I knew I was satisfied then.
Hey Kracked873, you can’t listen to Grab It? Yes you can,
cause track 5 on without a sound is awesome, especially that solo that starts the whole thing off.haha i’ll admit i should prolly give without a sound more of a chance, but hand it over is just great and thats that.
think i’ll pop on my without a sound vinyl at some point today and maybe i’ll have changed my mind afterwards.. maybe not. if not, then i’ll put on my hand it over vinyl and go "THAAts better.." haha
