Forget the Swan I was 15 years old sitting on some steps overlooking Lake Junaluska, NC. We were on a church retreat and I was hangin out with the older kids bummin cigarettes and acting like I knew all about the music they were playing… my soon to be best friend popped in their self titled album and the first song as you all know was Forget the Swan… I had just been dumped by my first girlfriend and that was the song that got me over her and into Dinosaur Jr.
My Favorite
Thumb w/Mark Goodier made me cry the first time I heard it… I was on a plane coming back from NY for the first time when I was 17… I had just gotten the import $31.99 from the huge Virgin megastore in NYC (I’m from Mississippi and that was the biggest city and music store I had and have ever seen… the fact that a Dinosaur Jr import even EXISTED hadn’t occurred to me) . It was a beautiful moment… I’m getting misty just thinkin’ about it.
Alright so that’s my 2 cents… ante up kids

Puke And Cry:I was 18 years old sitting in my room listening to the college radio station in July 1991.Luckily I had my tape deck running when it came on.When I first heard J`s voice it was like the voice I waited my life to hear!I waited for the DJ to come back and announce who this band was,he said Dinosaur Jr which was weird since I was having these dreams at the time of being in a record store and seeing these cd`s with pictures of dinosaurs on it.I knew this band was going to be a favorite though I knew nothing at that time about the underground rock scene.
My Favorite:
Severed Lips:this song just kills me,the melody is just so melacholically beautiful.I don`t think I could sing this without tears.First time I heard it was the Blake Babies cover in March 1993.
February 21, 2007 at 9:32 am #126003I think I was 15 circa 1989. All I did was skateboard in those days, my favorite skater was Mike Vallely. I rented the new Santa Cruz Speed wheels video because Mike was in it. He ripped up a schoolyard to Freakscene playing in the background. I loved that song but didn’t know who it was. A few months later I found out it was Dinosaur Jr. I bought Bug and fell in love with it. I bought Green Mind next when it came out and loved it too. I think my next paycheck after buying Green Mind I went out and bought the back catalogue. The rest is history. Hard to believe that was like 18 years ago.
February 21, 2007 at 10:00 am #12600413, heard the kracked and the start choppin and i just thought ‘whoa those are great solos’
February 21, 2007 at 10:20 am #126005The first Dino song I heard was Bulbs of Passion on a compilation tape called "Nothing Short of Total War" in 1989.
February 21, 2007 at 1:14 pm #126006lets see.. i was playing some music with some kids who were really into weezer alt rock like that. one of the guys took alot of clippings from magazines and put them on a wall where we practiced.
one of the clippings was dinosaur jr. had the band photo from dinosaur. and said "and you thought weezer was dorky?" or something of that nature.
i thought it was funny so i bought YLAOM.
February 23, 2007 at 11:10 am #126007I was 14 a freshman in HS and it was late fall of 91. My older sister had started her freshman yr of college and she bought me a cassette of "Whatever’s Cool With Me". She had seen the band on the Green Mind tour in Columbus OH. She told me I’d probably like this band…hence getting me the tape for the holiday. Here it is 16 yrs later, Im 30 and Im still fan, and still can’t believe the original trio are back together…
February 23, 2007 at 5:35 pm #126008Great stuff guys. Thanks for the replies… let’s hope it gets back to J, Lou, and Murph. Give their confidence a boost before they go on tour, (if they even need it)
Thanks for sharing.
February 27, 2007 at 7:15 am #126009This topic is making me feel wistful. Forget the Swan was playing when I showed up at a boy’s house. I made him play it again. To this day it’s still my favorite album. Oh, to be a young, impressionable teenager again!
March 1, 2007 at 12:26 am #126010Lollapalosa ’93, i was there for the event but one of the friends i went with was a huge Dinosaur Jr. fan, he and i waded down front for there set, i had never heard them before but after the first time J touched his strings i was hooked, ran to the record store the next day and bought Whatever’s Cool with Me, the only album they had in stock, then slowly i collected them. I’ve scene hundreds of bands in my day but nothing compares to that moment, I’d go see J play with anyone, he has it and that is all that matters, so glad i got to see the original line-up twice in the past couple of years, they have something too, can’t wait for the new album and hopefully many shows to follow…
March 25, 2007 at 9:24 am #126011I heard "Freakscene" on the "Speed Freaks" video by Santa Cruz. It was amazing. Sometime later I heard "the Wagon" on the G&S "Footage" video. we would watch these great vids and go out and skate the rest of the day………It’s been so long since I’ve been blown away by a great song. I mean there are great bands out there but…I must be getting old or something. later
April 4, 2007 at 9:49 am #126012I think I’ve replied ‘my dinosaur jr-story’ in an older topic. Anyway, I got into DinoJr via skateboarding as many others. I caught some skateboarding from TV on tape. It was Tom Penny doing some really stylish runs somewhere in England. Actually I think it is strange that Penny had a Dinosaur Jr -song in his part, but cool anyway. The tape is from 1995 and I watched it like hundreds of times and liked the song though I didn’t know the artist or the name of the song. That was the first time I heard DinoJr.
I found out the artist and name of the song quite many years after that video tape. In year 2001. After downloading some Dinosaur Jr songs from internet I bought Without A Sound and to my surprise the song, ‘I don’t think so’, was on that album!

Yup,
I was watching "The Year Punk Broke" video and I saw them doing Freakscene and was amazed by the INSANE NOISE. I went to the library to try and find some of their cds and all they had was Hand It Over, first impressions were not good – it all sounded like a grey dirge but now it’s one of my favourite Dinosaur albums and I can appreciate it for the purple dirge that it really is! -
