J Mascis en The Fog – Free so free

POP
Also at Crossing Border: J. Mascis, formerly of Dinosaur Jr., on his own with an acoustic guitar. He showed how beautiful that can be about one and a half month ago with a show for VPRO radio (that still can be found here at the VPRO-3voor12-website ). On the second cd with his new band The Fog he still is showing his excellent form. Very energetic, poppy guitar-rock (with the occasional loud and crashing guitar-solo) in line with the later Dinosaur Jr. records, but played with even more passion, without the routine that crept into Dinosau Jr. in the end. Key word on this record is Freedom, the album opens with ‘Freedom’, ‘Set us free’ follows soon, and the title song ‘Free so Free’. The man sounds like he is born again, free, maybe, who knows. Not that Mascis’ distinctive melancholy has gone away, but he doesn’t sound as tortured as before anywhere, not even when he sings ‘Everybody lets me down’ – the disappointments and disillusions he’s singing about seem to hurt him less and less. Good news, but let’s hope he will still play some of those old desperate songs at Crossing Border.
