hey, Viaorbi, thanks a lot for the hint, I haven’t seen that review before :) (& welcome here! :D)

well, but either it isn’t possible to make a link to articles of http://www.visions.de (because the articles are inside of frames) or my browser isn’t able to open that kind of links … anyway: to make the show review available: here’s a (google based) translation of that German show review:

          * * * * * *

Show review, written by JUKNAT on 15.11.2002:
          J. MASCIS & THE FOG on Nov., 12th 2002 in he venue ‘Gebäude 9’ (that means: "building No. 9"), Cologne
          reader evaluation: 11 points

It’s Tuesday night and I’m lookng forward to a great Indie guitar player. The venue is one of the whackiest concert sheds that I know: It’s worn, hidden on a remote, dark backyard and it has the charm of bulk rubbish furniture and the atmosphere of those former Punk shows in students’ movement offices.
The opening act LARS VEGAS plays arduous Free-Bar-Jazz, to which one should listen while sitting and consuming whisky + cigarettes. Unfortunately they play far too long – on 22.45 it has nevertheless an end.

The roadies are clearing up the stage and the suspicion intensifies: J Mascis came alone today and he will perform without THE FOG; probably out of the same reasons why he has cancelled all Germany tour dates, with the exception of the date in Cologne. Then J appears on stage, dressed unbelievably, wearing his usual box eyeglasses and an unbecoming ski waistcoat, equipped only with his guitar and a bottle of water. After the initial disappointment that there will be no bass and drums tonight, the solo gig simply becomes an experience. J switches in the middle of the songs by pedal from acoustic to electric guitar and he presents a broad selection out of his Dinosaur Jr and solo albums with an apparently bored, whiney voice.

Not only when he plays "Just like Heaven" of THE CURE as an encore, all in the hall, who came exclusively as fans (partly with a bizarre appearance), went wild. After the second encore Mr Mascis leaves with a dry "see you next time" and sneaks from the stage in such a manner, as if he wouldn’t know, why on earth he’s up there. It’s long after midnight when a surreal concert evening is over – great!

Hmmm….I didn’t have problems opening the VISIONS-article by that article tho. What browser are you using? Some doesn’t such id-based links.

My Internet Explorer tries to reach a page that is no longer there immdiately after opening that page with the J. review, strange, but after two tries I hit the ‘Stop’ button at the right time, the review is OK, but the person writing it is obviously not to well informed, as he/she was expecting a J. & the Fog gig….

So thanks 2 Cloudy for putting it up here
But that Guy is not that well informed , didnot even know the reason why the show was cancelled in November
Oh well, at least J got a review

I think the problems with the link are because of the frames the site uses.
                  It’s a review of a reader, not of a journalist (& he didn’t check Freakscene.net it seems  )

Here’s another – really enthusiastic! – review of the show in Cologne/ Germany (25th Oct. 2002):

                    http://www.musicmagnet.de :P

                    that’s my translation:

J MASCIS in the venue Gebäude 9

                    Shivers, please.

Light out and silence, please. And struggling for contenance. Trying to breathe as quietly as possible.
A man who isn’t really young anymore and who’s actually looking a bit outworn, enters the stage. J Mascis. The man who wrote "FreakScene" is sitting there in front of me. I’m trembling from the inside. Shivers galore. How long I’ve been waiting for this nearly sacred moment, when J Mascis takes his guitar, says "hello, thanks for coming" and begins to play. From the first moment, one can notice that there’s a legend sitting in front of us. J Mascis plays his way through all of his – indeed not insignificant – repertoire. We hear new, still madly good songs like "Everybody lets me down", as well as old Dinosaur Jr tracks, with which parts of music history have been written. Further the unforgotten ‘Cure’ – coverversion of "Just like heaven". And then the encore: "The Wagon" out of the "Green Mind" album, which made me fall in love with Dinosaur Jr, back then. And if it didn’t sound pathetic, I could say that this record affected my life significantly, or at least made it way more beautiful. [word! FC]

And please, who else plays his acoustic guitar with distortion like that, with these kinds of powerful chords and who else creates such extensive solos, creating thereby that incomparable atmosphere? J Mascis can play what he wants, it all just sounds madly well. Every time he begins to sing, my heart stops beating for a short time and I almost want to start to cry with joy. [wow, that’s what I’d call a fan! :) FC]
Parts of the Cologne audience go crazy and want to mosh. This time I think it’s ok, because they don’t do it in an aggressive way but it rather seems to be their way to deal the gigantic emotional wave that breaks there straight over us. But they fall immediately back to rest again, because of the emotional hypnosis. And J Mascis is still so nonchalant that one wants to become like that and no other way, if one is in his age.
His announcements can be summarized briefly: "hello, thank you, goodbye". Not a single smile. But not out of arrogance, but from nonchalance. There are many bad examples of musicians, who lose their charm when they get older. J Mascis didn’t lose anything of it.
