Mattman,
Yes, this helps. Thanks for the info. Do you recommend any audio set-ups rather than Real Player?
I’ll check the boards later for your response, but for now I’ve got to get a move on.

Gotta agree w/ Jaron. Winamp’s the way to go… Very customizable.

Actually, I recommend anything BUT Real Player… I hate how it takes over the entire system… That and Quicktime, just as guilty.

Yeppers, yeppers. Real Player wouldn’t annoy me so much except for the fact that I have disabled in preferences whether it runs at startup, and have removed it from sysedit under the start-up tab and yet every time I use it, it reapplicates the feature to make it run on start up. Agh!!!

As for quicktime, I have every video file (except .mov’s obviously) setup to run through ATI File Player instead. This alleviates the quicktime problems.

If programs taking over are a problem, try tweaking features to get it exactly how you like it then save the registry to a file. If you never ever install anything else, you can just reinstall that registry library and everything will go back to usual. [For the computer illiterate, do not try this, it will probably cause a crash. For the computer literate, you should have picked up my sarcasm. ]

heh heh, I got it…

Don’t worry about me. I have Real Player well under control. I was griping more for the sake of the less-literate, and because of the hassle I have to go through to keep it in its cage.

Personally, I feel that any program that needs more than a few lines of config data should write to its own separate ini file instead of the registry… A bloated registry seriously slows down boot times and can impact system resources…

How many of you have a Soundblaster Live? Its the worst of them all. It writes between 7 – 10 megs! to the registry (not to mention a miriad of other problems the aging design is causing, especially on machines running Athlons/Durons w/ VIA based motherboards.) I recently got rid of mine for the Turtle Beach ‘Santa Cruz.’ Lovin’ this card.

I’ve got a few questions reguarding MP3’s and the such. You can laugh, but answers would be more helpful. Firstly, what does MP3 stand for? Also, I don’t know what the difference is between dial-up and broadband. Each time I watch something both of these work the same. It kind of looks like it’s streaming, kind of filtered through or something. Is one suppossed to be better than the other?
I may be a doofus when it comes to computers, but I’m probably not the only one who’s unfamiliar with these things. I just have my Real Player, download, and wait for the goods! All you wizards out there answer me this please.

MP3 is a bit of a mislabeling. It really means ‘MPEG-1, Layer 3.’ MPEG is a video / audio compression scheme. It basically lets one compress a large file into a smaller one w/ a small loss in quality.

The difference between dial-up and broadband is basically speed. Broadband is generally much faster than dial-up. The reason that you may not notice much difference in quality when downloading videos is because the bandwidth speed itself doesn’t directly effect the video quality.

When you see a website that offers different qualities for different bandwidths, its because that site actually has multiple copies of the same video. Each one has been compressed more or less to allow for different file sizes. Of coarse, the more a video is compressed, the more quality it loses.

Hope this helps…

Yeah… I did that as well a few months ago, however I was upgrading from a SB64 AWE gold (ole school)… definite improvement.

I don’t mind a few lines of registry editing, but 7-8 megs!?! Damn…
