My thread is going to be different than Bucky`s.Bucky sticks with new stuff and I recommend old stuff since I`m just not up to the current music scene as much anymore. If anyone else want to join in here and recommend stuff they can do so :)

      My pick today:

GERALDINE FIBBERS-Lost Somewhere Between The Earth And My Home(1995)

Carla Bozulich has of the best female voices of the indie scene yet most people have`nt heard of her.Sometimes screaming enough to have emo kids running scared while other times singing with a twang(she did an album of Willie Nelson covers a few years back). The violin and acoustic bass gives a nice addition to the guitar roar. The song Dragon lady is the best track. The lyrics make me laugh and gets my evil grin out ;D

      Highlights:
      Lily Belle
      Dragon Lady
      House Is Falling
      Outside Of Town
      Dusted

POISON 13-Wine Is Red Poison Is Blue(1985)

Sub Pop released the complete Poison 13 on this disc in the early `90s.It`s just fantastic garage/blues punk/proto grunge.Lots of cover songs from Buffy St Marie to Joy Division to Richard Hell to Willie Dixon.Think The Stooges meets The Cramps with a wild dose of the blues but done in post hardcore fashion.Their cover of Love Me puts The Cramps version to shame. One of them later played in Mudhoney`s side project The Monkeywrench.I`m sure Mudhoney dug these guys.

        Highlights:
        Seventh Son
        My Biggest Mistake
        Die For Me
        When I Was Young
        Hellbound Train
First You Dream Then You Die
        What A Way To Die
        Love Me

            BASTRO-Sing The Troubled Beast/Diablo Guapo(1990/89)

Big Black fans take note. This Louisville,KY trio played the same brand of noise rock. This is one of those 2 albums on 1 disc deal on Drag City records from the albums they did for Homestead.

            Highlights:
            Krakow Illinois
I Come From A Long Line Of Shipbuilders
            Tallow Waters
            Guapo
            Can Of Whoopass
            Wurlitzer
            Shoot Me A Deer

                GIANT SAND-Glum(1994)

Howe Gelb plays a mean guitar and writes good tunes. This band has been at it since 1980 with a few lineup changes along the way.Not sure what you call their music;psych country? On This album they go from a Dire Straits-ish dark tune in the title track to a jazzy instrumental to a Hank Williams cover at the end. It`s always a fun listen.

                  THE BATS-Daddy`s Highway(1987)

Jangle pop from New Zealand.Early REM were an influence on this foursome.Singer/guitarist Robert Scott writes catchy tunes while guitarist/singer Kaye Woodward supplies lead hooks and sweet backing vocals.Bassist Paul Kean sounds like he`s playing an electric rubberband and drummer Malcolm Grant lays down a steady beat. They`re still around, they did an album last year after a decade of releasing nothing. This one is their crowning glory though.

Between the song/album/artist game threads, the what are you listening to and similar threads, and threads like this, the sheer amount of new musical insight that can be gained through this board is beyond comprehension. Keep up the good work ;D

                          HOLLY GOLIGHTLY-Singles Roundup

Holly started out in all chick band Thee Headcoatees playing `60s style garage rock. Her solo career continued with that. She sounds like she stepped out of 1965 or so.There`s also a good dose of blues and girl group sounds in her music. This collection includes 24 songs. Her cover of Pavement`s Box Elder might even top the original.

                            The Church-Starfish

Under The Milky Way was their big hit but these mystical aussies make great music.Willson Piper is one hell of a guitar player. They`ve done about two dozen albums since 1981.This album was done in Los Angeles and seems a highpoint in their `80s output.

Hard to pick just one album by these guys, all seem good.Portland,Oregon alt country band.Their leader Willy Vlautin writes songs alot of times from the perpective of drifters or just makes up good stories.

                                Squirrel Bait-Skag Heaven

Louisville,KY band of teenagers who had a record deal with Homestead while still in high school.A couple of them went on to the famous Slint and a couple went to the less than famous Bastro.Husker Du was a big influence, they had good punky tunes.

                                  Kustomized-At The Vanishing Point(1996)

Mission Of Burma drummer Peter Prescott also had a band called Volcano Suns in the `80s.Kustomized was his `90s band.Sugar drummer Malcolm Travis plays on this record and kicks everything into high gear.Peter`s vocals take some getting used to,but the rockin high energy songs here makes this very worthwhile.Maybe the most underated album in the Matador catalog.
