MBV`s Is`nt anything is great,Loveless is better in my opinion,it`s more produced then Is`nt Anything, they spent a ton of money on it,half million I think.
Big Black is worth checking out,it`s Albini`s old band in the 80`s.September 10, 2001 at 3:55 pm #67199Hey everybody,
I’ve missed this site. I’d have loved the opportunity to argue as to which Guided by Voices record to buy…
I reckon Alien Lanes anyhow but looks like that decision has already been reached. I had the doublr pleasure of finally getting a copy of Isolation Drills and seeing GBV live recently – fantastic!!
On the MBV front I wolud suggest Loveless – i think the figure spent on ir was £250,000 – a very brutal yet beautiful album.
as to other bands, where would i start, husker du, sugar, bob mould solo, folk implosion, babes in toyland, nirvana, big black, shellac, smog, beck,
I know many have already been meantiond, but I’ll be back with more when I’ve inspected my collection…
September 11, 2001 at 5:30 pm #67200Ok cheers,
Which Smog and Big Black albums are worth checking?September 11, 2001 at 5:49 pm #67201I liked Dongs of Sevotion by Smog, only out last year I think.
Think it got a bit underrated by the press and revies at the time, but it grew on me. Was only listening last week which is probably why it makes top of the list.
Not sure if you are into the grungier end of thing but if so you could perhaps try pond, babes in toyland, hole, superchunk, and many more…
September 11, 2001 at 6:16 pm #67202What about Big Black dudes?
September 12, 2001 at 7:39 am #67203What about the Wedding Present? Albini produced Seamonsters.
Do you guys like them?September 12, 2001 at 10:09 am #67204yeah – gedge rules. What happened to the Wedding Present? I bought (what may have been) their last album about 6 years ago, but haven’t heard anything since.

Haven’t read this whole thread, but definitely check out anything involving Eric Bachmann. Start with Archers of Loaf’s Icky Mettle and All the Nations Airports – other stuff is a bit of an aquired taste.
Let me know what you think.
September 12, 2001 at 10:57 am #67206For Big Black,"Atomizer" is the album that got them attention,it`s available on cd as "Rich Man`s 8 Track" with the "Headache" ep included.
The Archers Of Loaf are great,Icky Mettle is a fantastic debut.September 12, 2001 at 3:12 pm #67207Think I may be getting confused with Fountains of Wayne, and their songs about aliens and stuff – very wacky!
Might give Archers a go – have they got a website?
Should also have mentioned songs about fxxxing by big black – think I’m cracking up!
September 12, 2001 at 3:15 pm #67208Also meant to say that I though George Best was by far and away the best Wedding Present album, scuzzy sound, but top tunes…
Told you i was cracking up!
September 13, 2001 at 2:43 am #67209Sorry Nige,
Yeah try atomiser if you can get it. Got it on vinyl from Timebox records in your town – cool second hand guy who has all sorts of stuff.
Only heard a little Archers of Loaf stuff – aren’t they a bit wacky?
September 13, 2001 at 2:47 am #67210Wacky but cool.
The Speed Of Cattle is great as well.September 15, 2001 at 9:57 pm #67211If you like the Olivia Tremor Control you might also like Elf Power, the Mother Hips or Simian (they are English by the way…)
Never liked the Smiths, one okayish single (‘Panic’) and a lot of quite irritating Morrisey….
September 16, 2001 at 2:37 am #67212Hey Salamiguy,
I got Dusk at Cubist Castle! It’s cool. I see where you were coming from with the Magical Mystery Tour era Beatles influence. It’s quite an epic album as well I think. I’ve not really taken it all in yet, but what I know of it is great.
And to everybody: do any of you like The Smiths. Sort of the polar-opposite to J’s music but I think they are cool.
