Congrats Nige on getting Dusk At Cubist Castle!Jeremiah likes this one too,I was talking to him about it awhile ago.
The Smiths I have`nt listened to much,I like J`s cover of "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side".
Elfpower is cool,Neutral Milk Hotel is worth checking out too.September 30, 2001 at 2:12 am #67214What about Joy Division? I’m worried they might be too depressing.
October 1, 2001 at 11:10 am #67215Joy Division is no more depressing then anything else. They`re one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years.Check out Unknown Pleasures.
October 13, 2001 at 3:11 pm #67216Here I go again:
Are the Palace Brothers good? I read on allmusic.com that Albini had something to do with them. Is this true- when?
I
don’t generally like too much acoustic bleak stuff. Pavement and Beck are my favourite bands (apart from Dino!) and I think they have a bit of humour in the music- so any bands down that line greatly appreciated!Oh yeah- Smog- Julius Caesar? Yeah? No?
October 13, 2001 at 3:26 pm #67217‘Unknown pleasures’ is definitely the best way to start checking Joy Division.
Smog:
den Buck quotes himself from ‘2 more inquiries’ by a certain Nige:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font>quoteQuote:Smog is not one of my favourites, some beautiful songs (‘Dress sexy at my funeral’ is a brilliant song from their latest album), I saw them live last year at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, it was one of the most boring gigs I’ve ever seen (…and the bar was closed during the show, don’t know how I survived…)
Pavement: you should check out Preston School of Industry, the new band of Pavement’s Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannberg)
October 14, 2001 at 10:24 am #67218Nige-the Palace Brothers were one of the best bands of the 90`s;I don`t know if bleak acoustic is a desription of them, they could be down at times but still were so moving.
Spaceboy and myself are the only fans here I think but I think we could convert some more people here to their great music.
Check out Lost Blues And Other Songs,it features alot of singles, alot of great stuff;another great album is called Days In The Wake, but it`s not written on the album at all!it just says Palace Brothers,it`s their second album,it`s mostly just main Palace Brother Will Oldham by himself on a four track,lo fi folk at it`s finest.
Johnny Cash recently recorded an Oldham song on his most recent album,Will sings back up on it.October 14, 2001 at 10:39 am #67219I forgot to mention that Steve Albini did produce them,Viva Last Blues and Arise Therefore were by Albini;both albums were under the name Palace Music.
October 14, 2001 at 11:08 am #67220Another Pavement related thing to check out is the Silver Jews early releases,Starlite Walker is one to check out, great album;Steve Malkmus and Bob Nastdonavich are on it with DC Berman, the main Silver Jew guy.
October 15, 2001 at 3:24 pm #67221Hey peeps,
Bad Moon Rising by Sonic Youth? Good?
New Wave Hot Dogs/ President- by Yo la Tengo? Are they good?
Cheers.
October 15, 2001 at 4:07 pm #67222Bad Moon Rising by SY is in their experimental early days,it`s not always liked by alot of SY fans,so your buying it at your own risk.
Yo La Tengo`s Pres. YLT/New Wave Hot Dogs I like alot but some people are`nt that into it,especially New Wave Hot Dogs,it`s seen by some as mediocre, check it out if you like.January 4, 2002 at 3:03 pm #67223Nige-you should give the live album another try,I don`t find anything wrong with it.
There`s Nothing Wrong With Love is a good album, the songs are shorter if that`s what you like.I guess with BTS it`s a debate over the older stuff and newer stuff. The most recent album I did`nt like.January 4, 2002 at 5:57 pm #67224I think ‘Keep it like a secret’ is one of the most beautiful albums ever made…, ‘Perfect….’ comes second for me, I also love the live album, and this year’s ‘Ancient melodies…’ was one of the better albums of this year, I like it….
January 5, 2002 at 2:03 am #67225Hi there,
Remember me???Well my line of enquiry is the same:
What is the best Built to Spill album to get? I don’t really fancy the live one.
January 5, 2002 at 2:15 am #67226Hi Nige
The best BTS album I think is Perfect From Now On.January 5, 2002 at 2:36 am #67227Hey Nige:
If you didn’t care for the live album, I can’t agree with Salami’s suggestion of ‘Perfect From Now On’. Check out ‘There’s Nothing Wrong With Love’. It’s usually about $3 or $4 USD cheaper too.
