Thanks for all your help – we’ve got a gig friday night so I had to act quick and bought a "Fenix by Young Chang" off a friend for £50 and it seems to work really well with the Big Muff & compressor.
Does anyone know about these guitars? I’d not heard of them before.
Rip Van Winkle, I’m sure looking to take your advice too and save up for something solid.

I have a "Fenix by Young Chang" J-Bass copy that belonged to my brother-in.law. Don’t know where he bought it and I’ve never seen any other guitar/bass of this brand….still it is a quite decent bass.

Anyone who can’t set up the JM stock bridge is an idiot. Yeah, it rattles, but if you set it up properly theres less chance of it rattling and half of the tone goes with its bridge, the bridge gives that jangly and surfy sound. The only problem with it that I dislike and really really dislike is that theres a lot of slapback on the strings and my low e always pops out and its out of place. oh well.

These are big issues when you’re playing live, not just something an "idiot can’t handle"…Leo Fender has stated in multiple interviews that the bridge on the Jazzmaster was subpar and was a design flaw. That’s one of the reason the guitars were pushed to obscurity for so long. I mean, if people like Thurston Moore, Mark Arm, J and others hadn’t gotten them so cheap in the early 80s and put on a Tune-o-Matic, these would still be obscure guitars few people played.

They’ve got excellent tone and can produce a variety of sounds, but design flaws made them horrible to play for anyone not doing chords only.
