        HC, in re:

"non-therapeutic circumcision amounts to needless battery"

I’ve not read the latest research, but I have heard that there is evidence that circumcision can be justified medically, for example it may reduce the chances of contracting HIV. I know this is nowhere near settled, but it seems to make thie issue one where it’s difficult to say definitively what’s the right or wrong thing to do.

And this seems to always be the way it is for parents. I hate to tell other parents what to do, even though I’ve got a lot of experience at it and work hard at it myself. Usually, it seems better to tell them what you know, and let them decide for themselves.

Yeah, you’re right that there have been a couple of studies recently (on the back of anecdotal evidence) which seems to show a protective effect from circumcision. The theory being that the skin of the circumcised penis is thicker and more hard wearing (Ooh-er misses) and thus more resiliant to penetrative intercourse, and sunsequent blood bourne virus spread. The UN and World Health Organisation have came out and promoted circumcision as a preventative measure in sub-saharan Africa.
But, this has to be promoted VERY tentatively. Circumscribed men still get HIV. Health promotion as a whole (incorporating condoms, safe-sex promotion, counselling, STI tests etc) is the biggest measure to try and reduce transmission. And the last thing you’d want is any development of a "false sense of security" with regard to any protective effect of circumcision.

        Anyway, cool, whatever….

Don’t wish to hijack J’s being a daddy thread with all this chat about willys!!!

And I agree 100% – let people make their own decisions. But ensure they have the correct evidence, and they question the "normal" practice.

It is kind of amazing that there is such different practice between the US and UK.

As I mentioned earlier, I have just become a daddy for the first time ( ;D), and I was discussing circumcision with friends the other day. No-one (that I was talking with anyway) would give even a momments consideration to having their kid circumcised, yet in the US, often it’s done, as you say, without much consideration to it not being performed…

Different strokes and all that :)

Wow, I had three beautiful unmedicated births (one c-section for an 11 pounder) with two of the births (c-section is not a birth it is a harvesting) with two of the births and my husband in one, the baby was gently handed up to me, cord still attached and I put each child to my breast wrapped up in a blanket…………why on God’s green earth would anyone chose to inflict pain on a tiny new born baby is strange to me. I think there is a whole new breed of super concious parents who are not into circumcison……like I said, not one of my group of friends have done it to their boys, so in the future at least here in Athens, the other guy will be the odd man out. Now as far as circumcision being more healthy, my husband is not circumcized and neither are any of his four brothers and they have never had a "problem" with their penis. Lets just look at it from an intelligent point of view The human body has to be nature’s finest creation. It is unmatched in power and capacity. The intelligence inherent in our bodies is so vast that it is staggering. The human heart beats about one hundred thousand times every twenty-four hours. The heart and its pumping system are unable to be duplicated by scientists with success. The heart can pump an equivalent of sixty three humdred gallons per day, that is almost one hundred fifteeen million gallons in only fifty years. Our six quarts of blood are made up of over twenty four trillion cells that make three to five thousand trips through the body every day. Seven million new blood cells are produced every second. Our pumping system has the capability of working nonstop for decades without skipping a beat and this is only the circulatory system. All of this pumping causes the machine to generate heat and yet the body maintains a constant temperature of around 98.6 degrees. The skin is made up of over four million pores that are constantly acting as a cooling system. The digestive and metabolic systems have a ability to transform the food we eat into blood, bone and cell structure. I wont take the time here to go into DNA but a single cell cannot be seen without a microscope, yet what goes on inside a cell is beyond (hey I used beyond again) comprehension. The wisdom of a single cell is said to exceed all the accumulated knowledge of the human race to date. The smallest cell in our bodies is about one billion times the size of its smallest component. There are thousands of components in a cell, chromosomes, genes, enzymes, hormones, amino acids too many to mention and all of these work in perfect harmony. Considering these facts, and I could go into one thousand more, gestation of a baby alone is truely a mircle, considering all of these facts, could it be possible that this magnificent machine would come with extra skin on the penis that needs to be cut off. Oh, that must be the only mistake that God (if you want to call it that) made………too much skin on the penis. Dangerous, unhealthy………..what, who are you kidding?…………Do you know the history behind circumcision in the USA? Read up on it……….it started with puritans trying to stop boys from discovering masturbation.
Don’t take my word for it look up " History of circumcision in the Us" on the internet…….you will find hundreds of articles.
Circumcision IS against nature and it is painful……..ask a nurse, ask a doctor who has been around when it happens. As you can tell this is one of my hot buttons. But I love Tonas and I respect that he made a choice probably based on wanting his boys to look like him, which is understandable………but life is going to hurt my sons enough, I don’t want them to get a dose of pain within the first few hours of life. :-

From personal experience, circumcision doesn’t seem to be a particularly effective way of preventing that.

Well, yeah……………….I know. :D Also giving tons (imho) of sexual attention towards ones husband also doesn’t seem to be particularly effective either, from my personal experience. ;)

Giving birth must be the most frightening, most erotic thing.

Crazy a "hey congrats" thread turned into a debate on circumcision. Oh well at least we can agree to disagree in a civil manner. Lets put it to rest now.

haha, it is certainly not erotic, i saw a couple of videos in sex ed and it was gross. but whatever, its a new life and stuff.

I guess I’m talking more about going through it. It must be the most painstaking labour intensive thing a woman could ever do. And how many millions do.
