waiting on this one to come in…Doing Nothing" A History of Loafers, Loungers, Slackers and Bums in America…

while waiting, reading Fear:A Cultural History by Joanna Burke…synopsis of sorts…

          Quote:
In this groundbreaking book, acclaimed historian and prize-winning author Joanna Bourke covers the landscape of fear over the past two hundred years: From the nineteenth century dread of being buried alive — a subject dear to the heart of Edgar Allen Poe — to the current worry over being able to die when one chooses; from the diagnoses of phobias and anxieties produced by psychotherapists and lovingly catalogued, to the role of popular culture and media in inciting panic and dread; from the horrors of the nuclear age to the fear of twenty-first century terrorism, Fear tells the story of anguish in modern times.

That’s so nice of you! :D If I do I’ll IM you. I think we have to do something along the lines of relating the novel to the author’s life.

Is that your assignment? Relating the story to the author’s life? What, is your teacher an idiot?

I think Big Sur is better.

I love The Subterraneans, my favorite Kerouac novel.

That shouldn’t be a problem who doesn’t feel the need to escape life and become a run away alcoholic poet.

Still Life With Woodpecker. I am utterly, totally and enthusiastically amazed. And the best part is that when I read it the first time some weeks ago I was so drugged down in the hospital that I hardly remember any of it, apart from liking it a lot, and as I´m reading it now I´m also filled to the brim with painkillers, so I have to go back and reread whole chapters, this means that I´m rediscovering the book every time I pick it up. It´s a perpetum mobile of excitement and joy.

                                Ethnic America by Thomas Sorwell.

Interesting little journey into the diversity that makes america what it is and dispelling of rumors/common myths/misconceptions from an intellecual’s objective viewpoint.

The only problem is that it what written in 1980, so I’m sure the numbers have shifted dramatically.
