i’m not usually into solos, and shit like that, but j is so fucking brilliant at it. i love dino solos. they are great.
I gave the_lung a Karma warning because I really think there’s no reason to start swearing at each other. On the other hand, why start making sarcastic remarks (antipop, Chris) when someone just says he thinks J is brilliant?
We all love Dino and J, so let’s try to keep this place as cool as it has been until now.Thanks,

J has a secret. ALL HIS SOLOS ARE PARODIES OF THE SOLOS OF OTHER GUITARIsTS!!! His genius is keeping a straight face, musically speaking.
I think all guitar solos are sort of parodies these days, at my age (41) I remember some appalling guitar solos and ‘hair in the windmachine’ horrors.
J can go overboard live, but overall what saves him is an excellent sense of rhythm so that the solos never descend to mere twiddly diddly stuff
Mind you, More Light the title track is so close to being a Hawkwind track that I think the band’s survivors should get royalties

I think the Kevin Shields input is very apparent on the More Light track. Check out the MBV album with the pink cover if you’re interested.
MBV indeed, when J played on the bill with them at Brixton they were virtually white noise. Any sublety was not apparent in this large hall live. I’ve stood through some terrible stuff in my time, but that time I nearly left the room til they finished. It seemed to be a jejeune ‘artistic’ attempt to ‘challenge’ the audience.

that’s weird, the few people i’ve talked to that saw the MBV/Dinosaur JR gigs back in the day never stop raving about how good they were. but i have heard there was a bunch of noise too. well, even J has lots of feedback/noise in his shows. it doesn’t bother me too much, but it doesn’t last all that long.

j"s live shows are very noisey and in a bad venue you carnt hear shit!
i saw a show in 97 at the palace in melb and i only understood 10% of the show it was shocking!
so i can relate with kockney…..

Actually, J and Jesus and mary chain sounded great (a few overblown solos, but he was younger then).
No I dont think it was really the acoustics that made MBV sound awful. They simply were awful – under rehearsed (if at all) and overpraised by pseudish hacks to the point where they believed their own hype and just made a appalling noise and called it art.
As you may gather, Im not a fan 😉

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Did you like their studio stuff? i never saw them live so i can’t comment on how they sounded, but i love _Loveless_. its weird, lately i’ve been hearing/reading a bunch of people trashing MBV, saying that Loveless sucked, they were overhyped, etc. i can respect your opinion, but yer about 10 years too late!! i still think their studio stuff was great, especially for that time. same for Sonic Youth. but, i like lots of noise.

Loveless was/is a great album. Definatly one I recommend! I never saw them live so I can’t comment on that.

Has it really been 10 years since that gig? My ,how time flies.
I cant recall whether I ever heard mbv on disc, I do recall even at this distance how many column inches they got in that bastion of pseudery the NME. A lot of people claimed to like them back then. Mind you, some people like Radiohead now, yet all I hear is the sweepings off the floor from the Dark Side of the Moon sessions, outright plagiarism and lyrics that would make even a 1st year english student blush!
I suppose Ive done it now, I’ll go hide
