Cowboy Junkies & TVZ have a long history together, writing songs for each other, touring together, TVZ liked them a lot, and I think he would love this cover….
Somewhere in 1994 TVZ played in a small club near here (great gig BTW) and a good friend of mine (working for a local radio station) had arranged an interview with TVZ ‘the morning after’, I went with him, TVZ turned out to be an amazingly funny storyteller, and the planned interview turned into a whole day and night on the town with TVZ, ending up in the club he played last night , because that was the only place around where they knew and had some Cowboy Junkies records….

….one of the great stories TVZ told that day was about a guitar he borrowed to a guy called Blaze Foley (check his ‘Live at the Outhouse’ cd…), he told it often, so I borrowed it from here:
Quote:"Blaze’s guitar was often in the pawnshops, so a lot of the shows I saw Blaze play, he was borrowing Townes’ guitar," says Barbara K. "One of the last stories I ever heard Townes tell — I’m sure this was a story — he was talking about how after Blaze died, his guitar was still in the pawnshop, and they realized that the pawn ticket must have been in his suit jacket that he was wearing in his coffin."And so they went out, him and the Waddell brothers — they were Townes’ bassist and drummer for a while — they went out to the cemetery and got some guy with a backhoe to dig up Blaze’s grave. They cut open the duct tape and opened it up, and sure enough, there in the suit jacket pocket was the pawn ticket for his guitar. Who knows if it’s true or not. He told it as if it were true. Now, you know, that’s just one of those stories that both of them took to their graves. I would take that with a big shake of salt, not just a grain. Yep, Blaze and Townes — they’re probably still swapping that same old guitar back and forth."

June 17, 2004 at 7:57 am #75997Great story! I should clarify what I think of the Cowboy Junkies.I really like their Trinity Session album;this was before slowcore and alt country so hearing a band playing really slow and twangy was intersting to me.The Trinity Session is one of the best canadian albums ever I think. Then they did Caution Horses which I was`nt too into, covering Neil Young`s Powderfinger acoustic did`nt work(though I did like the song The Sun Comes Up It`s Tuesday Morning).Eventually they just became another dull canadian band. They did`nt do a good cover of The Post either

I heard that Townes recorded with Tim Folijan and Steve Shelley but those sessions never were released.June 17, 2004 at 7:57 am #76171Great story! I heard that Townes recorded with Tim Folijan and Steve Shelley but those sessions never were released.Agree with you on the Cowboy Junkies being dull, their latest albums are full of ‘music to fall asleep to’ (a friend of mine keeps buying them….
), but their latest album comes with a 5-track bonus ep, with covers of Springsteen’s ‘Thunder Road’, the Cure’s ‘Seventeen seconds’, Neil Young’s ‘Helpless’ and of course that TVZ song, and somehow, this ep is the best they’ve done in years IMHO
, and to call their cover of ‘The Post’ not good is quite an understatement….

TVZ & Two Dollar Guitar, that should be interesting, maybe the tapes turn up someday somewhere….
